BOO Posted June 10, 2008 #1 Posted June 10, 2008 Will it ever end or would someone please get a handle on these people. Jury Duty Scam DO NOT DELETE WITHOUT READING ! This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen. The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud. Freebird Posted June 10, 2008 #3 Posted June 10, 2008 A couple of months ago I got a call from supposedly a collection agency. They claimed to be trying to collect money that I owed Verizon for my telephone service. I knew that I didn't owe any money and told the guy that I would contact Verizon to find out what was going on. He was very rude and told me that Verizon had sold the past due account to the collection agency and contacting them would do no good. He demanded that I give him a credit card number to settle the account NOW. I told him where to go of course but then did call Verizon and as I already knew, owed them nothing.
FROG MAN Posted June 10, 2008 #4 Posted June 10, 2008 My call screener sends most everything to the voice mail. No more 800 #'s, blocked id callers, and all out of state numbers hit the voicemail. Don't even ring the phone.
