loehring Posted June 10, 2008 #1 Posted June 10, 2008 I've just started to notice a backfire when I downshift hard. I haven't done anything to the carbs so I thought it mights have something to do with that. Can this generally be fixed by syncing?
Neil86 Posted June 10, 2008 #2 Posted June 10, 2008 Have a close look at exhaust joints for leaks.....at the cyl heads, collector, mufflers.
loehring Posted June 10, 2008 Author #3 Posted June 10, 2008 I know the collar on the rigt side is loose at the muffler and the collector has some loose baffles. Would that cause the backfire?
SilvrT Posted June 10, 2008 #4 Posted June 10, 2008 I know the collar on the rigt side is loose at the muffler and the collector has some loose baffles. Would that cause the backfire? If the collector has any leaks (ie holes), then it will suck in additional oxygen and cause the fuel rich gasses inside to explode, causing a backfire. Had this happen on my '85 (backfiring) and when I took the collector off, there were splits where the mounting brackets were attached. I'd suggest removing the collector and thoroughly inspecting it for leaks. Might be a good time to cut it open and get rid of those loose & rattly baffles.
loehring Posted June 10, 2008 Author #5 Posted June 10, 2008 Thanks. It sounds like a pretty easy fix. Now I just need to find a way to get it done. Anyone know a welder in Buford GA??
SilvrT Posted June 10, 2008 #6 Posted June 10, 2008 Thanks. It sounds like a pretty easy fix. Now I just need to find a way to get it done. Anyone know a welder in Buford GA?? btw... make sure the welder you find can weld stainless steel ... did you find the post in here about how to open up the collector and remove the baffles? I know there's one someplace coz that's what I used.

If you're referring to cutting it open, I used a cutting wheel on my hand held grinder .. probably could also use it on a drill. BTW, I tried the duct tape approach... it's only good when the exhaust is cold! LOL

Chip, if you take the collecter off and bring it to Marietta, we can open it and close it back up. You'll just have to buy my buddy lunch and maybe a six pack! Edited June 11, 2008 by 86er
loehring Posted June 11, 2008 Author #10 Posted June 11, 2008 I can definately do the lunch Todd. If I rode out there do you think some water would cool it enough to pull it? The next few weekends are pretty tight but I could get it there in July. What do you think?
86er Posted June 11, 2008 #11 Posted June 11, 2008 (edited) Maybe if you rode over and we did lunch while it sat and cooled. That should work. Would need to be a Sunday or Monday as I work Tues thru Sat. As far as the backfiring, you probably need a carb sync as well. Especially if it's been a while. Yamamama recomends 2500 miles. I'm lucky to get it by 25000! Edited June 11, 2008 by 86er

Since I'm no welder, I can't comment but when someone says to me that it's made out of stainless steel and you need a welder who knows how to weld stainless steel...then that's what I do. ??????? All the better if it's nothing special and any welder who can run a mig welder can do it.
GigaWhiskey Posted June 11, 2008 #13 Posted June 11, 2008 I used a cutting wheel on my hand held grinder .. probably could also use it on a drill. Don't use a Dremel. Yea it will work but it will burnt the guts up. I ended up buying a new Dremel. Can't be without one of those!

That would be great to knock it out in one trip. (I do need to go ahead and get one though)
