Naked Rider Posted June 10, 2008 #1 Posted June 10, 2008 i need your help on this matter. i bought my wife a brand new helmet($80) to match the bike. got it out of the box and put it in the trunk she got it out and there was a big scratch on it i asked her when did she drop it she said that she didnt so i just blamed it on one of the kids. got it out again sunday and there was another one on it by this time i am getting real mad about it but didnt say any thing to the wife or kids. so today i rode it to work went to put my helmet in the trunk by the way mine is a half helmet no scrathes yet i look at hers again and i can see that it is a fresh scratch on it i looked inside of the trunk and i see paint on the bolts that hold the luggage rack on and i put 2 and 2 together. so my queistion to you guys is what did you do about this problem did you put some thing on them to make the problem go away or did you cut them down or am i the only one with this problem? by the way i gueess i owe the kids an apology when i get home.
Iowawegian Posted June 10, 2008 #2 Posted June 10, 2008 Same thing happened to us the first night we bought the Venture. If you have a thin helmet cover it will keep it from scratching any more.

You could alway go to walmart and get the chair leg protectors. The ones that you put on the bottom of the leg so it doesnt scratch the wood floors. Cover the bolts with those and that will solve the problems also.

dragerman Posted June 10, 2008 #5 Posted June 10, 2008 Try cleaning off the bolt heads and putting a dab of clear silicone over the heads then let it dry overnight.
V7Goose Posted June 10, 2008 #7 Posted June 10, 2008 Here is your solution: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17655&highlight=bolts You can replace them with either slotted or philips bolts (sometimes the slotted are actually a little flatter), but just make sure you don't bugger the head at all when you tighten them down or you will leave sharp little edges and have to file them off. dynodon Posted June 10, 2008 #9 Posted June 10, 2008 The shorter bolts sound good, but I keep a small towel in my bag and cover my helmet with it. You could also take some of the self-stick foam tape that is used to put between pickup truck toppers and the truck bed rails. This would stick over the bolt heads and keep them from scratching?

Or stick a Venturerider.org Sticker upon the Scratches.

I used the loop side of a 2 inch wide adhesive velcro tape and ran a strip from front bolt to back. Nice and soft.

wkboard Posted June 12, 2008 #18 Posted June 12, 2008 If the scratches didn't go all the way through the paint- you might try clear coat scratch remover from the autoparts store. They have a bunch of different brands of it. Maybe scratch remover for plastic windshields might work, also?
skydoc_17 Posted June 12, 2008 #19 Posted June 12, 2008 Try taking some toothpaste,(without the crunchy crystals in it) thin it with water, rub it on with a cotton cloth, briskly, then buff it dry. Make sure it's thinned with water. I've even used this on those cheap plastic lenses that pass for headlights these days. Earl.

I covered the bolts with some little rubber plugs I found laying around in my junk drawer and that fixed it for potential future scratches. As far as the scratches in your helmet are concerned, I suspect that they are kinda deep and not just a surface-level stuff which can be rubbed-out. Right? This is what I did. There's a beauty supply shop near of home which sells just about every shade of nail polish, and a lot of them look just like little samples of automotive (or bike) paint. And, they even have these tiny, bottles for a dollar. So, I bought one and used it to touch-up the scratches in my helmet. It worked really well too! Remember . . . your dropped helmet will hit the ground in direct proportion to how new it is, and how much it cost you. Pete.
Naked Rider Posted June 13, 2008 Author #21 Posted June 13, 2008 my wife suggested the nail polish thing as well. i will give it a try over the weekend and see what happens. i wonder if they would frown at me if i took the helmet in and asked if i could color match it with there nail polish lol lol.
petekadish Posted June 13, 2008 #22 Posted June 13, 2008 I think that store employees would get a kick out of it. Now, if I were to take my daughter's nail polish to use for my bike stuff, then I would probably get a frown. I would suggest taking in your helmet in to correctly color-match it. Pete.
Guest cwil2988 Posted June 13, 2008 #23 Posted June 13, 2008 Duct tape for the inside of the box, and, I have learned that if I own a helmet that isn't scratched somewhere, something is wrong. Every time I buy a new one, I end up dropping it within a few days or something, once it is scratched, never drop it again.
