lonestarmedic Posted June 10, 2008 #1 Posted June 10, 2008 Anyone ever try and diagnose or repair the auto volume microphone in the 1st gen. ? Mine was working until this week. Possible that I got water in it washing the bike. Or I changed out my speakers. Pulled the radio and both side panels to install them. Also installed a noise filter on the C.B. I got used to the auto volume. JB
Russ Posted June 10, 2008 #2 Posted June 10, 2008 wish I could help, but I've never been able to figure out how mine works to begin with.
Squeeze Posted June 10, 2008 #3 Posted June 10, 2008 You might take a look at the white Spot next to the Volume Knob. I think there's the Mic for Volume Control under the white Mesh. If i'm cought in Rain, the Auto Volume doesn't work until i blow the Water away there
lonestarmedic Posted June 10, 2008 Author #4 Posted June 10, 2008 Hi Squeeze - The volume mic is dry. I checked all the pins under the radio while I was there. Next step is to pull the control and check the little mic. It may be clogged up etc. Or the years of water and dust may have taken it out. I will look into replacing the little critter. My guess is the control potentiometers are ok. JB
Squeeze Posted June 10, 2008 #5 Posted June 10, 2008 That's what i've meant to say. It isn't a electrcal Problem on my Bike, but the Mesh is soaked in Water (and Dirt) and this isolates the Mic from any Noise Signal. Whalla, no Boost on Volume.
mbrood Posted June 10, 2008 #6 Posted June 10, 2008 Mine had that white mesh... all torn and ragged... so I pulled it apart and replaced the white mesh with a THIN piece off a wet suit... I shaved most of the foam rubber from the inside and so far it's worked just great, water seems to stay out and the volume adjusts just fine. Although we don't get THAT much rain here. Here's what you see inside... http://bergall.org/temp/venture/vr0.jpg http://bergall.org/temp/venture/vr1.jpg http://bergall.org/temp/venture/vr2.jpg
lonestarmedic Posted June 11, 2008 Author #7 Posted June 11, 2008 I pulled the panel and opened it up to the same point as in mbrood's pictures. Washed the white screen and cleaned the microphone. Had a lot of dust and crud inside. Cleaned with CRC electronic cleaner. Re-assembled and voila! I have auto volume again. I will look for one of these controls and add it to my collection of radio items to reverse engineer this fall. I can't see too many items that cannot be replaced easily. Thanks for the pictures mbrood. I knew what to expect when I pulled it apart. JB
Rosie1965 Posted April 18, 2012 #8 Posted April 18, 2012 I know this is a 4 year old thread but going to wake it up again. Does anyone know if there is a way to bypass the auto volume? Maybe put a switch to toggle it off or on? Mine works but is sometimes unpredictable. 1990 VR
Prairiehammer Posted April 18, 2012 #9 Posted April 18, 2012 IIRC, turning the outer ring on the volume control completely counter-clockwise effectively disables the auto-volume feature.
Rosie1965 Posted April 18, 2012 #10 Posted April 18, 2012 I will give that a shot. Don't have an owners manual. Thanks!
Rosie1965 Posted April 18, 2012 #11 Posted April 18, 2012 IIRC, turning the outer ring on the volume control completely counter-clockwise effectively disables the auto-volume feature. Yep, that did the trick! Thanks!
