on our way down to Dons Maintenance day, my friends rear Metzeler tire rubber tread separated from the inner plys. this tire was only 8 months old and had lots of tread left on it. he was very fortunate that it did not let go out on the highway. we had stopped in Fredonia, New York on friday night. when we got up Saturday morning, we pulled out of the hotel parking lot, drove down the road and he had to pull over as there was a big lump of bulging rubber hanging out the left side of the rear tire and the rear end of the bike was wagging left and right. we found a bike repair place, had his bike trailered to the repair shop, had a new Dunlop installed and then proceeded fashionably late down to Maintenance Day.

Ha Mother, I had my Metzler, rear tire chuck off, on the turnpike last weekend, we rode it 120 more, pulling our trailer, the tread hole was about the size of a tennis ball.

I had 7,000 miles on it, and just replaced it with another Metzler.

Next time, have him try a BF Goodrich TA Radial. Its a much safer tire. Its a high performance tire rated at over 1000 lbs at 35 psi!

Was your friends bike a 1st gen or 2nd gen or something else? Reason asked is most Metzler complaints are from 2nd gen owners. Thanks.

Big question:

 

What pressure was he running? Every time this has happened before Metzler claims that the tires were run under inflated. I believe, but am not sure, that Metzler says to run the max sidewall pressure.

No, actually, I've seen just as many reports of Metzlers blowing chunks on 1st gens. as I have on 2nd. gens. At least on this site.

I'm going to come right out and be cantankerous here, This is the 5th person I have met personally or is a friend of mine that has had problems with Metzler 880's I know many of you run them, and that is your choice, but the tires are JUNK!

Your taking your life in your hands when you run them, I know what coming off a bike at 75 mph feels like because of rear tire failure. Metzler should be hung out to dry with these POS tires....end rant!

I believe his friend was riding a Harley Road Glide. They rode down together.

his rear tire pressure was 48 psi when removed from the bike.

 

my rear Metzeler let go last summer with only 2000 miles on it, exactly the same way my buddies let go. it was on my first gen.

 

if you value your life, dont run with these tires.

Seem to me that for what they charge for these tires them Metzeler folks need to get slapped with a lawsuit or two to wake em up a bit! There is NO excuse to be putting out a shoddy product on something as critical as a MC tire.

 

And we wonder why guys are going over to the dark side?:whistling:

I ran max pressure in mine when I had them and it lasted 1700 miles before it started chunking rubber..I know some run them on this site and no trouble but there is a pattern of failures that says loudly that there IS a problem. For those who continue to run them PLEASE watch them close,the first thing you will notice is small cracks then quickly start chunking. be Safe,Tom

Got a friend here at work that got an 880 last year and I keep an eye on it every day!! We'll see what happens and if I can catch it before it does.

Everyone who's had a problem needs to contact the Federal Consumer Protection Division. They're the ones who can force Metzler to do something. The more complaints, the faster metzler will be forced to do something.

I use have to use the ME 880's on my '93 VR by our Law here. The're not bad. Not as sticky as my Michelin Pilot Road2 on the Vmax but so far so good. If i would be free to choose, i'd probably use the Michelins Commanders.

Curious: How many of these tire failures have been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration?

I've got 880's on two bikes without any problems. My slightly modified '83 has only got 3k or 4k miles with them. My Honda Sabre has 12k. Who knows - but I have not seen any problems. Seems ok to me.

Thats a good question, probably not many folks would even know to report it to the proper authorities. My biggest problem is not nessecarily the people who run them unknowingly, but the damage they could impose say in a group ride if someones tire went out and cause a pile up.

Is anyone tracking where these tires are made??

 

Yesterday my riding buddy noticed the rear tire on his Roadstar had seperated. It had 8K miles and was due to be replaced, but he went on a short ride and the tread seperated by the time he got back home. He went out last night to check it out, and sure enough, the tire was made in BRAZIL! :think:

 

Is there a problem with the tires made in Brazil? We both have ridden a lot of miles on Metzlers without a problem, but this is making a Bridgestone look real good.

I would not buy a Metzeler tire, irregardless of where it was manufactured.

If I had some on my bike now, i would take them off ASAP.

Its not worth the risk!!

My last motorcycle tire was a Metzler, made in the Fatherland.

 

I had no problems with it, I even had a plug in it. I ran it at 50psi.

Wow!! I find it amazing that with all the known problems...people DEFEND this tire!! You know, the odds are, 5 out of 6 times you'll still be alive after playing Russian roulette....Doesn't make sense to me..:confused24: I don't wanna play....:whistling:
