Guest wilson963 Posted June 8, 2008 #1 Posted June 8, 2008 I am new Here, I just purchased a 83 venture royale 1200cc yesterday. It's my first bike in 22 years. Anyway it did great on the highway but when I slowed down to come into town my temp gauge went in to the red, when I got home I could hear the fan running. I checked coolant it seems fine. Is this normal?

Is this normal? Depends on the outside temperature, but probably not. My '83 runs up close to the red but the fan doesn't kick on in 100+ deg weather. I'd suggest checking the thermostat. Does it run hot in cooler weather? If so it's time to start checking things out. Also there's a by-pass valve in the thermo housing below the radiator that may be set in the wrong position. It normally has the top of the lettering pointing toward the five oclock position. You might also try adding water wetter to the coolant. I tried some last year on the Colorado trip. I don't know if it helped, but it didn't hurt. Also on the '83's the impeller on the water pump is plastic, and have been replaced as needed with a metal impeller. If the vanes are dammaged..old age.. you're not getting enough circulation.. Hope this helps.

The fan will come on when sitting in heavy traffic. I'm 5" 10" and the angle I look at the heat gage in my normal sitting position is a little deceiving. If I sit up real straight the needle is actually in the green area but when I sit in my normal position it sometimes appears to be in the red. I have a friend at work that had an 83 for 15 years and it did the same thing. If it gets into the red out on the road then I would then dig into it further. There is an additive that has been discussed and used by some of the members that is listed on earlier post's that you could add. Does anyone remember the name of the product? It's supposed to drop the temp 15-20 degs. f. Hope you enjoy your classic:080402gudl_prv:. Ronnie
Squeeze Posted June 8, 2008 #5 Posted June 8, 2008 I said this before, measure the Temperature with external Device. If you find a Problem then, besides the Impeller Problem, clean and flush the Radiator. Outside and inside. The Product which lowers the Coolant Temperature is called Water Wetter.

Cutty Posted June 15, 2008 #7 Posted June 15, 2008 Do check the water pump and valve, add a switch to turn fan on when you want. There's also a fan blade being sold to move more air made by MUZZY.
