So, the radio has been intermittent, at best last few weeks. Comes on, goes off, all on it's own.

Tried the recommendation tonight of, splitting the fairing, reseating the big connectors and applying di-lectric grease before the last reseat.

All, to no avail.

Here's the current symptoms.

-Radio plays through rear speakers only.

-Volume control does nothing, doesn't get louder even at 30, only goes mute when it goes to zero.

-When adjusting volume, the front speakers make that beep with every volume click, so they're working.

-Also, the CB transmits through all 4 speakers and the volume adjustment for that, works fine.

-Aux still doesn't work. Thought I was on to something when I discovered the connector from amp to cassette wasn't connected together. Still didn't work though, after connecting.

One dealer thought it was the "head unit" needs to be replaced. Is that the amp?

Another dealer thought, it's the antenna...

So, it's sitting in the garage looking ugly, as the fairing is off. Luckily, rain tomorrow.....I hope.

Any idears? Perty please?

When my radio was acting up, I cleaned, greased and reseated all the connections, not just the big ones. I don't know which one was the culprit, but it works great now. You might try cleaning and greasing the rest of the connections since the faring is already split. Just a thought

It's been a while since I looked at mine, but I think there is a balance adjustment from front to rear. Could it be that is biased to the rear? Just checking the simple things first.

Head unit (cassette player, ha), dunno. That mute/channel changer, when it has water in it, can make a mess of things (is it cranky muted, dunno). Can that be uplugged and then try it, I dunno. Rear speakers? Not stock (this is a first gen right?). Make sure you got the noise sensor part of the volume turned up. You say comes on goes off, is that power?

I dunno, just tossing things out there.

Might as well try it, the fairing's still off. I'll give that a shot tonight when I get home.

For the other's feedback;

Yup, checked the fade, doesn't do anything any more.

It's a 2000 MM, 2nd generation.

Thoughts I was on to something when I found the Aux cable from Amp to Cassette wasn't even connected but, no luck.

I'll grease it all up tonight and see what happens.

Maybe I'll find a cassette (we still have some) and see if that's working or not. One more piece of the puzzle....

Thanks again.

OK, Idea, you may have allready done this, however ---

In that you still have all the fairings off.

With the System, working in the Defective state, go over all the connectors

carefully, one at a time, and move or wiggle them carefully.

Try not to disturbe more then one connector at a time.

IF-- the problem is a plug or connector, you might be able to pin point it this way.

IF, the problem was the Antenna system, Then the AM would be much more effected then the FM.

I dunno what's the deal, I tried everything under the sun, per recommendations here. Nothing helps.

Plus, now I can't get the middle screw on the left and right side on the back of the fairing back in, threads don't catch. Grrr.... Advice on that?

But anyway.

I can hear through all 4 speakers, barely, with no volume control, with MCU detached.

Noticed when I unplugged/plugged the blue MCU cable in the fairing, it would make a pop noise and sound would return to the front speakers.

Checked all fuses, are all good.

Greased all connections, twice.

Took apart the MCU, to the point I discovered it's water tight, then put back together. Doh.

I'm starting to think it is indeed, the Clarion head unit. Bummer, cause that's expensive.

Anyone have one to sell, cheap? Or know where to get one?

Nothing like spending two hours dinking around, to no avail.......

:bang head:

But hey, I did learn more about the guts of the fairing.

Idears? Cause, I give up.

I was having a simular problem with mine. But mine would come and go as it pleased. it took a few trips to the shop before they took my word for what it was doing. What i came up with was the control head on the handle bars. Mine was replaced and its has been fine ever since.

Does anybody on this thread happen to have an extra volume control knob laying around? Man I need one... Thanks.

hi rv

just went thru all the parts listed by pinwall cycles, no mcu listed. i called them once about a part not listed. was told if it's not listed it's no good. i think your right about the mcu, but i will still send the radio to ya to try. if it fixes the problem then we have a deal if not just ship it back. i hate electrical problems.

best reguards
