SAME here, curtis!

i know i have door locks, and deadbolt locks, but i honestly can't remember anyone EVER using any of them.

i don't lock up anything, and i NEVER take my keys out of the ignition, because i'd probably lose them.

i do have a 6 foot chain link fence on three sides of my place, with a 4 foot one separating me and my neighbor.

i also have an "AMOS".

110pounds of GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG, no mean, but VERY protective of his yard.

i feel sorry for all of you guys, who live in fear of being ripped off,as a daily worry.

i guess though, if what you have don't look as good as what the thieves already have, they won't bother you!

lol:confused24::whistling::whistling:

It's been so long since I felt safe enuf to live as you do I can't even remember what that was like. We live in an area that, a couple years ago, had the highest rate of auto thefts in all of Canada. I did live way out in the country near a very small community between 1980 & 1983 and nobody locked nuthin around there but before that I probably locked things up for many years. Even after we moved to the country, I was locking the doors etc just as a foce of habit. I'm sure I was the only one in the area doing that LOL.

I guess it's all a matter of where ya live and it's getting to the point that there are fewer and fewer "safe" places anywhere on this continent.

My son used to live over there. Had his truck stolen twice in three years ( who steals a 12 year old toyota?) and his apartment broken into twice. He has moved. A friend picked up a brand new truck and drove it to the ferry for Saltspring. He parked at the pub down the road for a quick one. When he came back out some kids had broken into it and hot wired it.

I have lived on Saltspring for 30 years and never locked my doors, the keys are in the truck and car.

When I sold my austin healy several years ago the guy I sold it to lived in Victoria. The car had a broken axle so he towed it. When he was halfway to the ferry I got a call that someone had my car and they were going after him. I told them I had sold it. Then I got a call from the ferry parking lot. Same thing. Then I got a call from the captain of the ferry saying my car was on board and he was going to have the Mounties waiting for the guy at the terminal. Don't steal a car on Saltspring.

I have had to deal with insurance companies:080402gudl_prv:

If everyone could carry a concealed weapon legally, I believe crime would go down drastically. I sure wouldn't break into anyones house or try to rob them if I thought they might be armed and could defend theirselves. I know some of you don't have that option depending on where you live, but around here, it's a way of life. to me thats better than any insurance policy I have.

Just my thoughts, not trying to start a gun debate or anything here.

It would be interesting to know what the statistics are in your area compared to others that would support your belief. Not being "debating" but I'm not 100% a believer of that concept although I can tell ya, if I happened to see a jerk attempting to steal my truck or break into my house, etc, if I had a gun I'd probably shoot the bum first, ask questions later ... and that's where I think the concept goes wrong. Having said that tho, if the threat of being shot was commonplace for would-be criminals, they might...just "might" think twice about such things..... so many pro's and con's to this one eh!

We have the right to shoot if we feel threatened for our life in any way, and that extends to vehicles as well as your house. Now you better be right when you do it, because the legal part of it will probably bankrupt you, but at least your alive.:detective:

I know you will find the homicide rate way way higher in the U.S than in Canada.

Trouble with everyone carrying a gun is that too many people use them.

i , DO NOT , agree with the "CONCEALED" carry law!

i firmly believe that every, law abiding "U.S. CITIZEN", should be allowed to carry a side arm, shotgun, or rifle, boldly shown for all the ""bad boys" to see.

i hate to constantly worry about "my stuff", showing.

i believe when we all have a right to carry arms on our person, hidden or not, then crime rates will plummet, as self defense rates rise!

"sheep surrender, and goats fight back". law of nature!

Hi Rick,

Mighty happy that the police found your truck and I hope you'll have it back home soon.

I said thank you to the guy I said a prayer to in your name.

Ride hard, ride safe, but always ride with God.

Thanks for the "thanks" and the prayer my friend. I'm not a "like minded" person; however, I am appreciative of folks like yourself.

Been following along on this. I was wondering how long before you got it back. Hope you find minimal damage. At least you don't have to deal with the ins. on this one.

My brother in law once had a chevy II (that was his late aunts) stolen and a year later when he got it back, it was a pretty cool low rider:rotf:

Glad you got it back,

Steve

Truck should be at the body shop Monday...I'll be able to do my own inspection then (which the ins co requires anyway) ... then it all depends on the shop's work load as to when they'll get it done ... I hope not too long but at least my insurance covers me for a rental vehicle. So far I haven't needed to rent anything ... we take public transit to and from work and can take a taxi elsewhere if we need to (also paid for by insurance). One thing this "experience" has done for us is that we've now decided to continue taking public transit to and from work all the time whereas before, we'd drive the truck up to where the skytrain station is...instead now, we take a bus there (it's only 2 blocks away to the bus stop). We'll save on the gas cost and the truck won't be exposed to the thieves that prowl the skytrain area.

About 5 years ago I had my other truck stolen (I mentioned this in another post)...same kinda truck...when I got it back it had basically the same damage (door handle and ignition) ... the thieves stole all my music (casettes) but left a really good horse blanket, another good blanket which I now use for the beach and a nice pull-over sweater which I'm still wearing LOL.

How did they know your Size ?? ??:rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf:

I'm just glad that you got your Truck back. The Damage can be fixed, and if there's nothing else wrong, tha'ts what i would consider a somewhat better Outcome of the worse Situation.

When/if you install an alarm, you'll find that the good ones are two staged. If a loud/heavy bike, car, or truck, rolls by it sets off the first stage which is just a chirp. The second stage is when the car is hit or tampered with, that sets off the alarm and also your pager if included. You could also consider a proximity alarm that warns off anyone that gets too close to the vehicle as well...

ya... been looking into some of these already...question becomes how much does one invest in such things for a 12 year old vehicle worth less than $3000 ???

So, truck is at the body shop and I've had a chance to look it over...

OK..so I checked into this and our insurance company (ICBC) which is government only gives a discount on your Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverages ONLY if you're using a "Passive Electronic Immobilizer". The amount of the discount is dependant on the type of vehicle and the area you live.

Had meeting with the adjuster today and I'm covered with a $300 deductible but no deals for having a club installed.

They (the thieves) cut the steering wheel to get the club off and because of that, insurance will refund me $100 (reduction on my deductible)...kewl!

They (the thieves) didn't steal a thing from inside the truck and they left for me an almost full 20 lb propane tank and one of those heavy duty plastic truck tool boxes (although it's not in the greatest condition and it doesn't fit my truck) ... kewl!!

The damage to the door where they broke in ... haha ... that was already like that so basically, they utilized the same "break in entry point" that someone else had done before I got it and that was never fixed so now I get that fixed for free LOL. The steering wheel was all worn away and I had a cover over it coz it was so bad... now I get a new steering wheel and a cover too!!

So, all-in-all I think I came out of this pretty good.

What do you figure it cost you this time in the way of trouble and time getting around and then lucky enough to get the truck back. I guess that's the deciding factor. Then there's the remote start, on those cold mornings, and here I use it to start cooling the truck before I get to it.

As to the remote start... well, if I lived way up north where it gets cold I might consider it but never did in the past so why start now... and it's never that cold or that hot around here.

As for the "hidden cost" of my time and trouble... nah ... I haven't been inconvenienced that much. However, I was lucky...this time...and last time. Still considering... It would have been a major inconvenience had the truck never come back or if it was a write-off coz then I'd have to go thru the hassle of replacing it and dealing with the ins co on it's value, etc... now that would be worth the cost of a good alarm system.
