Front wheel shake

Got a 1989 Venture. While driving, if I loosely hold or let go of the handlebars, I get a terrible shake in the front wheel that would dump the bike if I continued to let it shake. I had the front wheel balanced and the front end checked but nothing. Got a dunlop 3 on the rear and a dunlop 2 on the front. Any help? I am leaving for British Colombia on June 18th. Thanks

I am going through this problem now. Got a lot of possibles. Gonna try and have the folks help me on the 21st in McKinney Tx. If I keep my hands on the bars all ok. I realize that is after your leave date but I am planning on lots of pictures and notes.

Loose steering head will do this.

Put her up on the center stand. Push handle bar over one way to the other the should go over and come back a little.

Also sit down in front and pull on the wheel....it should be solid.

See the tech articles in the 1st gen section tech section.

I added about 5 degrees of CW rotation, to the Steering head Nut on my 89, cleared up the Head Shake.

Might be time to drain and refill the fork tubes with new Oil.

You might be low on oil in one side.

Check the Pinch bolts holding the forks in place, and the bolts holding the Fork Brace in place.

Oddly it only happens at slower speeds and I can feel it when I turn from a stop. I tried most of what you suggested, front tire inspection/ pressure, head stop torque, etc with no success. I will take it to a dealer today and probably have the front tire replaced. Thanks for all you help.

Did you try loosening the 4 pinch bolts, and the Axel, nuts, and the Brace bolts.

The Add some torque to all of them, and tapping on everything, with a rubber mallet, to relieve any " Stress " , ie. make sure everything is aligned properly ??

Then retorque everything 2 or 3 stages.

Might be worth trying.

If that don't work, yes probably time for a new tire. Maby just needs balanceing.
