91nwl Posted May 31, 2008 #1 Posted May 31, 2008 I have a 1st gen. I really like it, but it's almost 18 years old. and I toy with the idea of picking up a late model 2nd gen. I've never ridden one. My question is; Those of you who have made this move, What adjustments did you notice in the way the bike rides or the way you ride it? I tour and cruise, but I also ride it hard sometimes and enjoy twisties. I've never ridden with floorboards.
1BigDog Posted May 31, 2008 #2 Posted May 31, 2008 I went from an 83 to a 99 5 years ago. It felt strange at first with the forward controls and the top heavy feeling but after a few weeks it felt fine. Its gonna feel heavier and a bit more cumbersome in the twisties but as you get more familiar with the bike it should be easier for you. Keep in mind that these are two different types of bikes and handling will most definitely be different. After my 99, I could never go back to a 1st gen again.
Freebird Posted May 31, 2008 #3 Posted May 31, 2008 You would really need to try and ride one. It's an entirely different beast. The only similarities are the basic design of the engine and the Venture name. I've owned both and the RSV better fits my preferences in regards to riding position and fits me better with my long legs but that is a personal preference that may well not apply to you.
OlRusty Posted May 31, 2008 #4 Posted May 31, 2008 I had and 83, and I thrught it was a pretty good bike. My trouble was that I am kinda short, and I always had a problem on uneven ground. I sorta dropped it a couple of times. The 06 seat is closer to the ground. which makes me happier. I like the forward controls, and it does take a while to get used to them. Also Like the extra room.

Now that is a new one on me. Can't say that I've ever done that and I've been riding a reaaaaaaallllll long time.:rotfl: I had 3 of the 1st gens before getting the 01, like Freebird said it is a different animal but I like it a whole lot better then the first gen. Mainly the setting position to me, I can ride all day on the RSV but the VR was tough on my back. And if you really like the twistes and do that a lot the VR is probably a better bike and it has a little more zip. The front end tends to waller some on the RSV but overall for me, I wove it!! Jerry
