Abnorml Posted September 5, 2022 #1 Posted September 5, 2022 I picked up an 83 venture that sat for at least a year since it last ran. I got it to start but it ran like crap. My question in when the engine is running should the slides flutter or open smoothly. I never really looked with the other Yamaha's I've had. (XJ550, XS1100, XS650). I did check and they seem to move freely, if not a little slow. When the weather cooperates I'm going to pull the slides, inspect and clean them. 1983 Yamaha Venture 73k Plastics are really boogered up so it'll be nekid when I'm done
Marcarl Posted September 6, 2022 #2 Posted September 6, 2022 The slides will vibrate more than slide at idle. If you twist the throttle then they should move to a greater degree but they still will have a vibration pattern rather than sliding open and closed.
RDawson Posted September 6, 2022 #3 Posted September 6, 2022 It’s going to run terrible while you watch the slides. The airbox lid must be on to run right.
saddlebum Posted September 6, 2022 #4 Posted September 6, 2022 Also its not uncommon for these bikes to run a bit sluggish if they sat this long. Before you get to far into it, put some fresh gas in it add some seafoam or other carb cleaning additive and ride it hard. keeping the rpms to the high side. Often a good highway run is all that is needed after a long sit. If things do not improve after this than start looking into possible causes. Start by trying one the hotshot methods of cleaning and flushing the carb. ON BIKE CARB DEEP CLEANING.pdf Cleaning First Gen Carbs On The Bike.pdf
