jburrell Posted January 9, 2009 #26 Posted January 9, 2009 Now go to the tech info and read about installing the bypass toggle switch. It will save you from walking or towing if the switch goes out again or you can just make a jumper for the switch and use it when or if you have a problem. You just have to jump across the 2 wires under the gas tank to start the bike. Been there done that when my died the 3 time.
Sleeperhawk Posted January 9, 2009 #27 Posted January 9, 2009 I'd like to see and inspect two or three of these bad Switches and could tell what's the Cause of the Failure. Some mentioned there's too much Current through the Switch and by wireing a Main Power Relay into the Circuit it can be solved. I've heard not enough Voices and not seen actual Damage to create an Opinion about that. I do know that when mine went out on the 05 around the 55,000 mile mark, the ignition switch key was extremely hot and all I had on the bike was passing lamps, nothing extra. Riderduke's switch went out last weekend and his mileage on the 04 is in the same vicinity. Most likely a quinsendence though.
Squeeze Posted January 9, 2009 #28 Posted January 9, 2009 Hot Key or Switch Housing means excessive Resistance which means fast Wear on the Contacts. Maybe one of our electrical Guru's should develop an upgrade Kit with a fat, up to the Task Main 60 Amps-Relay, at best as an Plug and Play Solution. This would make those Toggle Switch Solution obsolete.
BradT Posted January 10, 2009 #29 Posted January 10, 2009 Very likely the connectors inside the fairing causing the radio problems. You will need to split the fairing. On the right side you will see 5 connectors maybe 3/4" - 1" in diameter. Unplug and plug them back in several times to wipe away the oxidation that is likely causing the problem. Then use a bit of dielectric grease and plug them all back in again very well. That will probably cure the problem. Agree but also use a cale tie and wrap them all together. Also use another one and attached it to the inner fairing there is a little slot molded into the fairing just for this. They will vibrate and give you problems at a later date Brad
