Yeah, that's an important one. 3 months after picking up my used '06 the shifter came off while riding. Let's just say it wasn't terribly dangerous for me when it happened but that initial Oh $#@! moment, well now I can laugh at it. 1
Dutch Navigator Posted January 29, 2022 Author #53 Posted January 29, 2022 Today (Saturday) a day in the paint booth. All Tupperware got 2 layers of filler: 1
Marcarl Posted January 29, 2022 #54 Posted January 29, 2022 I really like the look of the first picture, those swirly marks are an awesome design. Oh well, guess it's not my scooter. Next pictures look more traditional, nice work. 1
Dutch Navigator Posted January 29, 2022 Author #55 Posted January 29, 2022 It's a great effect in the first picture. You just need sandpaper (600) and some water....... Sometimes we're all artists. Thanks for your reply.
Dutch Navigator Posted February 5, 2022 Author #56 Posted February 5, 2022 Today a 'wet' day. After spraying the grey filler on the metal parts also, we sanded everything with 400/600 sandpaper. The parts are like new. Next week we're in de paint booth again spraying the base-coat on all the parts. The shiny parts are still wet from sanding. 2
Marcarl Posted February 5, 2022 #57 Posted February 5, 2022 Might I suggest a quick wet sanding with 2000 paper before final coat? Seems to give a deeper shine I think. 1
Dutch Navigator Posted February 5, 2022 Author #58 Posted February 5, 2022 To be honest, I think 2000 is too fine. You can use 2000 to sand the definitive paint and then polish it.

luvmy40 Posted February 6, 2022 #60 Posted February 6, 2022 Love coming along for the ride! Great job! 1
Marcarl Posted February 6, 2022 #61 Posted February 6, 2022 So how long before it gets it's first ride? Pretty awesome. Like the paint booth!! 1
XV1100SE Posted February 6, 2022 #62 Posted February 6, 2022 A lot of work but looks great to this point. Looking forward to seeing the final results. 1
Dutch Navigator Posted February 6, 2022 Author #63 Posted February 6, 2022 We are planning the first ride in May......... 2022 that is :).

saddlebum Posted February 7, 2022 #65 Posted February 7, 2022 (edited) Those pictures bring back memory's of rebuilding my bike in 2007 after it was written off when I was run off the road. I went through all the same steps. The sanding part was the worst. Just when you think your done sanding you spot a piece that looks better than the rest and you realize your not done sanding just yet. Grab more paper more water and another case of beer (YEH.. BEER ....BEER is very important when sanding ) and saddle I mean settle right back into sanding. But once it is done you and the final paint job looks great. You feel real good about what you did which by the way calls for another case of beer to celebrate a job well done. Edited February 7, 2022 by saddlebum 1

Dutch Navigator Posted March 1, 2022 Author #69 Posted March 1, 2022 (edited) Part eight (already) of these renovations series. One more Saturday in the paint booth and the paint job is done. Hope you guys enjoy! https://youtu.be/xVOawoaBJ0g Edited March 1, 2022 by Dutch Navigator 1
Marcarl Posted March 2, 2022 #70 Posted March 2, 2022 Movin on, still looking good. Worst part will be when it's all together and there is this one part that still needs a home,,, and you just know where that will need to go eh? 1
Dutch Navigator Posted March 2, 2022 Author #71 Posted March 2, 2022 😀 We hope every part get's a home. We have more than 600 (detailed) photos, 50Gb of video and about 40 exploded views on A3. But, still it will be a puzzle.
Dutch Navigator Posted March 6, 2022 Author #72 Posted March 6, 2022 (edited) Well, let's be honest. Not everything is going smoothly........... Today in the paint booth we encountered some bad 'crackle' problems with the paint on a fender. Sanding, two thin coats of primer, three thin coats of paint (and 3,5 hours) later the fender was ready for the clear coat. Overall, it was a long and productive day with great results. Clear coat finishes it all! Edited March 6, 2022 by Dutch Navigator 2
Dutch Navigator Posted March 11, 2022 Author #74 Posted March 11, 2022 (edited) Yesterday we worked on the finishing touches about the spray paint. This time we tested some 'racing stripes' or 'striping' (hope this is the correct English). Today and tomorrow we will finish all the Tupperware with 2 layers of clear coat. Striping is the word, stripping is not something that is suggested you do. So far it looks good enough for me to ride. Carry on! 1
