Dirtworkerml Posted July 14, 2021 #1 Posted July 14, 2021 Hey guys I just picked up a 85 venture it seems to be in great condition runs great and is everything I want except it started leaking oil by the gearshift seal. After reading and researching a little bit it looks like there’s a lot underneath that left side cover lol is this a job I can do myself with some basic skills
Dirtworkerml Posted July 14, 2021 Author #2 Posted July 14, 2021 i’m pretty new to this site so bear with me also I use Instagram and it’s the same name if you guys can help me dirtworkerml
Dirtworkerml Posted July 14, 2021 Author #3 Posted July 14, 2021 Ps. Being that they’re finicky with the oil level when the oil level is lower than half it leaks a lot less
Pasta Burner Posted July 15, 2021 #4 Posted July 15, 2021 Beautiful bike. Sorry I can’t help with the leak, but the experts on that will come along soon.
saddlebum Posted July 16, 2021 #5 Posted July 16, 2021 two most common spots are the two covers on that side front one is the stater cover the rear one is the middle gear cover. the gaskets are very narrow on those. Also check the bottom bolt on the rear middle gear cover it should have a copper washer under the head or oil will leak from there. Another thing to check is the clutch slave seal were it mounts to the engine. it is behind the the second gear cover over hang between the stater cover and the middle gear cover. If none of these appear to be leaking than you need to look higher up. 1
larrydr Posted July 17, 2021 #6 Posted July 17, 2021 My 83 xvz1200 had leak at the gear shift lever , I pulled the cover and pressed out the bushing and made a new one in my lathe and installed it and put the seal back in .. That was 10 months ago and still okay
Marcarl Posted July 18, 2021 #7 Posted July 18, 2021 It being an 85 there is nothing that can't be fixed, just ask me, I know. Now,,,,, how to fix it??? well that can be discussed. Welcome to the most amazing site this side of eternity. Looking forward to dialogue. 1
Scott Severs Posted October 17, 2021 #8 Posted October 17, 2021 Dumb question I read that by pulling the lower bolt from the middle gear cover will drain the oil from behind it. Is this the same oil as from the rest of the engine? I assume so as I cannot find any words to refill it.

Some pull that bolt during oil changes to get that out, there’s not much there so I personally don’t mess with it.

Pulling that screw drains approx a 1/8 - 1/4 cup of additional engine oil. Some pull it, most can't be bothered, ( it is the one screw in the cover with a a copper washer under the head ), . However if you do make sure you always include the copper washer under the head preferably with a new one if possible. Edited October 17, 2021 by saddlebum
Scott Severs Posted October 17, 2021 #11 Posted October 17, 2021 Thank you for the reply. As I get older, I am finding more time to do repairs on my own. I couldn't find any definite answer.
theportunionkid Posted October 18, 2021 #12 Posted October 18, 2021 On my 83 it leaked where the wires came out of the front cover. took a couple of tries to seal up with silicone. Biggest hassle is getting it good and clean &dry before sealing.
Pasta Burner Posted October 19, 2021 #13 Posted October 19, 2021 My mystery leak was coming from the hose that goes to the breather under the air box. Let some oil out and the problem went away

The sensor is not a pressure sensor but rather an oil level sensor. So when you crank on it then the oil in the pan will slosh to the back and cause a red light. No problem. 1
