Berdman Posted February 9, 2021 #1 Posted February 9, 2021 Running XVZ13ah. Going to change coolant this spring. What would anyone recommend to use? Is there anything that autozone might have for cars that would work? I might want to use cheaper coolant this year since I am unsure of the integrity of the coolant system. Thanks
Marcarl Posted February 9, 2021 #2 Posted February 9, 2021 What ever you use make sure you flush it well to remove all the old stuff, Some coolants don't mix well. 1
vzuden Posted February 10, 2021 #3 Posted February 10, 2021 It needs to be compatible with aluminum 1
saddlebum Posted February 10, 2021 #4 Posted February 10, 2021 (edited) As said it needs to be aluminum compatible and silicate free. What ever you do, DO NOT use GM's DEXCOOL, it has been known to attack head gaskets on some engines Edited February 10, 2021 by saddlebum 1
larrydr Posted February 10, 2021 #5 Posted February 10, 2021 I did not know that anti-freeze was much of a issue ..I am using Dexcool ... Is there particular brand that would work best ??? I don't mind changing the antifreeze if that is the right thing to do
SpencerPJ Posted February 10, 2021 #6 Posted February 10, 2021 I use old school Prestone green (or generic) on my old 83. I prefer to buy the 50/50 blend, but if you get full strength, dilute with distilled water. 2

I don't mind changing the antifreeze if that is the right thing to do Definitely get RID of the DEXCOOL and flush well with water. like I said it tends to attack certain head gaskets and that is something you do not want to get into. It was designed for GM's after a certain year and their head gaskets are designed to be compatible. I like the prestone antifreeze myself. The old green stuff is fine too but make sure it is aluminum friendly and silicate free. I agree with the 50/50 premix but you can save a little if you buy the concentrate and use it with ether distilled or de-ionized water. Tap water or well water has too many minerals in it and like your kettle at home will build up sediment in your cooling system, a problem that was all too common in the early years hence having to boil out and/or flush the cooling system with acid or vinegar back then. Berdman Posted February 10, 2021 Author #8 Posted February 10, 2021 Thanks for all the replies! I decided to go with Yamalube/Yamacool. Its not very expensive and I figure its what Yamaha would use. Its a 60/40 pre mix. Will wait for warmer weather to flush the radiator. 1
