Motorcycle Mike Posted September 9, 2020 #1 Posted September 9, 2020 I posted this on the General Tech board and got no replies. I could use a little guidance before I screw them up. Is there a trick to remove the weights form the ends of the grips? I got the one on the throttle part way out and it wont go any farther. It doesn't want to go back in either.
slowrollwv Posted September 9, 2020 #2 Posted September 9, 2020 They unscrew but if they have rusty threads they will get tight. Did you use PB Blaster or JB 80 or WD 40 on them?
Motorcycle Mike Posted September 9, 2020 Author #3 Posted September 9, 2020 Thanks, That's what I thought they should do but it locked down so tight I thought maybe there was something else to loosen. I'll go spray them now. Thanks again.
Motorcycle Mike Posted September 10, 2020 Author #4 Posted September 10, 2020 I finally got it out. It turns out whom ever assembled the bike cross threaded it. I have a metric tap and die set but nothing that large. Does anybody know what size I need to get? Thanks.
Motorcycle Mike Posted September 10, 2020 Author #5 Posted September 10, 2020 If anyone needs to know, it's a M 16 with a 1.50 pitch. Of coarse no one locally has one. The largest anyone has is M 12. Oh well, now I wait.
slowrollwv Posted September 10, 2020 #6 Posted September 10, 2020 Mike if you can get a bolt that size you can cut a trench with a hacksaw along the bolt length and run it in to chase the threads. That worked on my bike.
MonsterBiker Posted September 10, 2020 #7 Posted September 10, 2020 Are the weights even needed? Previous owner removed them from my bike when installing Kuryakyn grips. I have no complaints.....
Motorcycle Mike Posted September 11, 2020 Author #8 Posted September 11, 2020 Thanks guy's. Tap and die are already ordered and I can't ride right now because of my shoulder so no rush. I know the weights aren't necessary but I like them.
ragtop69gs Posted September 11, 2020 #9 Posted September 11, 2020 The weights do help to dampen hand numbing handlebar vibrations. You can also insert a handlebar snake, they are usually made with lead shot in a fabric sleeve to further dampen vibration. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Freebird Posted September 11, 2020 #10 Posted September 11, 2020 Also, KuryAkyn does make weights for their grips.
