I have noticed a transmission noise in neutral for a while now ..Have replaced the clutch basket bushings which did help a bit ...Sounds a bit like 2 gears rubbing against each other ..When I shift the transmission into gear the noise is gone , the transmission works fine ...My plans are to leave it for a winter project ..Can this problem get very bad suddenly ?? I did notice some of the gear shift linkage needs replacing ...

Maybe you could post a vid with the sound included. That statement can be quite broad and can conjure up all kinds of sound memories.

You might also try to stand the bike up-right to see if the sound changes and/or change your brand of oil.

Often times I think it's just the gears 'running loose' inside the transmission and kind of rattling against each other when in neutral.

I am inclined to agree with Marcarl in that it sounds like gear rattle. One common cause is engine idle speed too low should be between 950 and 1050.

when you say 2 gears rubbing, do you mean the teeth ae trying to mesh?
