larrydr Posted August 17, 2020 #1 Posted August 17, 2020 I have noticed a transmission noise in neutral for a while now ..Have replaced the clutch basket bushings which did help a bit ...Sounds a bit like 2 gears rubbing against each other ..When I shift the transmission into gear the noise is gone , the transmission works fine ...My plans are to leave it for a winter project ..Can this problem get very bad suddenly ?? I did notice some of the gear shift linkage needs replacing ...
Marcarl Posted August 17, 2020 #2 Posted August 17, 2020 'Sounds a bit like 2 gears rubbing each other' Maybe you could post a vid with the sound included. That statement can be quite broad and can conjure up all kinds of sound memories. You might also try to stand the bike up-right to see if the sound changes and/or change your brand of oil. Often times I think it's just the gears 'running loose' inside the transmission and kind of rattling against each other when in neutral.
saddlebum Posted August 17, 2020 #3 Posted August 17, 2020 I am inclined to agree with Marcarl in that it sounds like gear rattle. One common cause is engine idle speed too low should be between 950 and 1050.
Patch Posted August 17, 2020 #4 Posted August 17, 2020 when you say 2 gears rubbing, do you mean the teeth ae trying to mesh?
