boominup Posted May 22, 2008 #1 Posted May 22, 2008 The following pix shows what my rear Dunlop D404 did to me last Sunday while going to a Blessing of the Bikes in Litchfield, CT. My wife and I were 12 miles from home when we both felt that thumping especially when banking to the left. My riding buddy checked it out and we immediately changed our plans after realizing what was happening. I gingerly drove it back home and returned with the cage to experience the cerimony. Earlier this season, I realized that my tire guage was faulty and was causing me to ride underinflated by several pounds. I do NOT blame this on Dunlop but on riding for 3 yrs underinflated. Make sure your tire guages are reading properly. I have since purchased Dunlop EIII's. Brian
flb_78 Posted May 22, 2008 #2 Posted May 22, 2008 Dang, you are very lucky. 3 years on the same set of tires? Dang, I've gone through 3 rears in 1 year before.
GeorgeS Posted May 23, 2008 #3 Posted May 23, 2008 I think you hit something, that damaged the tire, it went from there.
boominup Posted May 23, 2008 Author #4 Posted May 23, 2008 I may have been attacked by a New England pothole at one time or other but I just don't recall. Don't forget that that tire was ridden at 30-35 psi for 3 yrs because of a bad pressure guage. That in itself could have helped things along. The roads around here are worse than horrible! I put on about 66oo mi last year and not much at all this year because of the nasty weather so far. Can't wait for June to ride up to Lake George. (on some new EIIIs) Brian
BOO Posted May 23, 2008 #5 Posted May 23, 2008 Sometimes if the tire is just low it will sound like that. One year when I took my bike out of storage while riding it home it started making a noise like that. 28lbs of air. Don't know why it went down over the winter but it did. I think you were very lucky though that it didn't blow. Jerry
boominup Posted May 23, 2008 Author #6 Posted May 23, 2008 BOO, if you look at the pix carefully, you'll realize why I was getting a thumping. That knot is the size if my fist and it was hitting the inside of the swingarm. That tire is almost square. Brian

Brian Yeah, I did indeed see that and understand what you went through and your noise was probably much worse than what I described but I was making a point that you can get that type of noise out of very low tires and I suspect your tire being low contributed a lot to the separation. By the way I am a Dunlop fan and until they really do me wrong that's what I ride on. I too put the E3 on the bike, great tire, little hard and I have over 20,000 miles on a rear as we speak and will probaly get another 5,000 on it. Again you are a lucky man, Jerry
boominup Posted May 23, 2008 Author #8 Posted May 23, 2008 WOW! 20 K miles. I'm very anxious to try these EIIIs out. I really cannot say anything bad about the 404s because they are 5 years old. I've heard yales about them having a very soft compound and not going very far mileagewise. I'm pretty lucky to get 12K out of mine. I should have swapped them last year but they really looked great. That's good news on the EIIIs. I just rec'd them today. Have a nice weekend. Brian

I really like the E3 but at the time they had no tire for the front so I put an EII on the front. By the way I got fairly good mileage on the 404's, can't remember exactly how much but I will check my log when I get a chance and let you know. Think it was near 15K though. Jerry
Grandpagak Posted May 24, 2008 #10 Posted May 24, 2008 I'm going to be putting new tires on mine bike shortly.. and it will either be the 404 dunlop, or the continental milestone, (rear),with the continental tk16 on the front.. I have given some thought to the tk17 for the rear... really dont know wich i will go with for sure.. i'm partial to the elite 2, but cant afford them at this time.. what do you guys think..????
Guest BigJohnD Posted May 24, 2008 #11 Posted May 24, 2008 There are a lot of tire pressure gauges out there...out of curiosity...what did you have and what did you get to replace it. I have several, but wonder some times if they are as accurate as they should be.
boominup Posted May 27, 2008 Author #12 Posted May 27, 2008 The one I originally had that was bad was a digital unit that I had bought at WallyWorld for aboyt $15 but ended up not being worth the paper it was drawn up on. I have since purchased an analog type which I got from my Son in law who manages a Goodyear tire center. You take a test and it holds the reading until you touch the button on the side. I can't recall the brand name right now. I'll check it with his equipment on occasion since it can easilly be calibrated. I'll give you the brand name tomorrow when I get into the trunk. Brian
