SpencerPJ Posted July 3, 2020 #1 Posted July 3, 2020 I know there are many 2nd Amendment supporters around here. I have been looking for something like a Remington 870 pump 12 gauge, in the shorter barrel ‘home defense’ variety, maybe 18-20". Seems everywhere I visit, ie the local shops, nothing in stock. One would think there is a revolution mounting, lol. Anyways, I’ve seen some of you guys post about this online place or that, and wondering if anyone had a good source for finding such a rather simple legal shotgun?
BlueSky Posted July 3, 2020 #2 Posted July 3, 2020 I have bought a handgun from budsgunshop.com. Might check with them.
zagger Posted July 3, 2020 #3 Posted July 3, 2020 (edited) Personally, I like the Mossberg 590. https://www.mossberg.com/firearms/shotguns/ Although the magazine tube is quite long, you can even double the capacity by using the new buckshot "mini-shells" made by Aguila. I couldn't find a local store that stocked those shells but I was able to order them online. https://www.aguilaammo.com/ammunition/category/shotshell/minishell/ I store my shotgun in a V-line locking case which is flat enough to fit under a bed. If you have kids living with you, the case can be locked shut - or you can leave it unlocked if you feel safe with that. https://www.vlineind.com/shop/shotgun-case-home-defense-shotgun-safe/ Bottom line is that even crazy people don't argue with a shotgun! zag PS I forgot to mention that you need a little adapter if you want to use the Aguila mini-shells. Not a big deal to snap it in place, but the shells won't cycle properly without it. PPS It has been a few years, but as I recall, purchasing a gun online is not a problem but it has to be shipped to a local gun dealer where they can check your ID, etc. As I recall, the dealer charged me $25 to handle the paperwork. cowpuc Posted July 3, 2020 #4 Posted July 3, 2020 INDEED, gotta go with Zag,, that Mossberg 590 is a fine line of shooters IMHO.. I shot Remington 870 for many many years and love them but,, the Mossy has developed into a cult gun which,, in turn,, sent the aftermarket crazy wild development for trick stuff.. Kind or like the "AR" platform for rifles.. Either way though Spence,, I have used Gunbroker for ever for my shooter needs and have found them to be fairly solid as far as an online auction outlet.. I use a local pawnshop that is an FFL as my ship to and he only charges 20 bucks in or out per gun. Easy peasy as long as your clean.. Dont know about Indiana but Michigan is still functioning under the long gun "gunshow loophole" = can buy/sell person to person with no background = hand em the money and walk away with the shooter.. Problem with times like these is that private sales in news papers and the like seem to be down because of the lack of trust in dealing with the public that has been stirred up.. Our local gun shops are going thru what yours are too,, busy aint the word for it.. Kind of refreshing IMHO.. Gotta love Americans gravitating toward standing on the Constitution and the increase in local business is also appreciated.. You could also be watching local estate auctions for an 870.. One thing nice about the 870, there was a really good barrel selection for them and maybe if you landed one you could just buy the barrel at length you want for it... I grabbed Tip one of the Turkish made auto loaders with pistol grip that fits her wayyyy better than my AR12.. She has been busting clays with it and gotta tell ya,, I am VERY impressed with it.. Not as much fun as my AR12 w/ a 25 round drum feed though, talk about rock n and roll n.. Thinking of selling out my bucket list AR's to up my $$'s for my bucket list Vette project... Got an AR12, AR10 and AR15 with all the fixings.. Binaries for both the 10 and 15, 22lr conversion for the 15,, drum feed for all, sites/scopes/slings/cleaning kits,, plenty of ammo including tracers and penatrators (stuffs over a buck a round now),, usual stuff.. If you hear of anyone looking for a bulk buyout on an AR line let me know.. If I see an 870 sitting at a local gunshop here north of you I will definitely let you know.. Your Fellow Friend of the 2nd Puc
BlueSky Posted July 3, 2020 #5 Posted July 3, 2020 When the recession hit in 2008, I bought a used Remington 1100 semi-auto 12 gauge at a gun show for home defense. I removed the plug to increase it's capacity and it sits in a handy position in my house. I don't shoot that much and prefer to let the gun load itself. I don't want to have to think about pumping the next load if some buttholes are trying to break in. I don't want to have to use the AR15 due to its penetrating power. I might knock off a few neighbors as well as the intended. P226 for backup.
Sylvester Posted July 3, 2020 #6 Posted July 3, 2020 Like Puc, I use Gunbroker and am very pleased with them. Just got a S&W 629 .44mag for a lot less than the stores have them for and it is new not used. I have a Mossberg in .410 with long magazine and pistol grip and 16 inch barrel. Fill it with 000 buck and you will thin a crowd out in a hurry and that is not discharging the weapon. Easy to keep close buy for quick use.
SpencerPJ Posted July 3, 2020 Author #7 Posted July 3, 2020 Thanks everyone. I will add Mossberg 590 to my wish list. Indiana is honestly pretty easy to exchange guns, sad part is Chicago folks come and get them actually too easy. I have a lifetime carry permit, clean as can be, so that would not be a problem. I will start stopping at pawn shops and get more word out. I see some really nice stuff online I would like. We have a large Gun show end of August that might be a place to look as well.
Motorcycle Mike Posted July 3, 2020 #8 Posted July 3, 2020 When I was looking for my 870 I had to get a local gun shop to order it. No one stocked one with the short barrel.
gmarshall Posted July 4, 2020 #9 Posted July 4, 2020 Try armslist.com. Youll find local and national sales. I have less luck with gunsamerica. also check out local auction houses.
Freebird Posted July 4, 2020 #10 Posted July 4, 2020 For what it's worth, I too am a huge fan of the 870. Mossbergs are good but I just love the 870s.
Condor Posted July 5, 2020 #11 Posted July 5, 2020 Food for thought... As long as you plan on using the 870 for home defense shop for one that's been road hard and put away wet. Barrel length doesn't matter. Break out your hack saw and lop any bbl off the 18 1/2". Load it up with '00' buck and yer good to go... Lord help any intruder...
MonsterBiker Posted August 7, 2020 #12 Posted August 7, 2020 I might be a little late to the party but the last shotgun I bought was a used single shot CBC Model SB that I found on Guns.com. It was a very pleasant buying experience. I am not recommending that shotgun for your purpose, I bought it for nostalgic reasons (I owned one as a teenager in West Africa). Puc mentioned his scary black AR-12..... I have it's alter-ego, the full-on evil Communist Bloc VEPR-12. Is it simple? No. Is it legal? Depends on where you live. Is it small and light? Heck no. Is it a hoot to shoot and an attention-getter on the range? Why yes! Yes it is. With the muzzle brake I have on it standing next to it is like standing next to a field howitzer when it goes off. Pic of it with my AR-15 for size comparison:

Looks like a 20,, maybe 25 round mag hanging from its mag well?? NICE,, VERY VERY NICE!!! So the guy standing next to me out on the state land shooting his 22 Marlin smiles and says,, ""thats quite a machine your busting clays with there,,, I always thought an AR12 like that would make a good home defense gun.. What do you think?"".. My reply,, "well,, I actually calculated out its fire power one time figuring x9 - 7.62 Nato (actually larger @ 330 thousandths) bullets with each yank on the trigger traveling 1300 fps out of a short barrel with the I.C. choke screwed in and the ability to empty her 25 round drum as fast as I can pull the trigger pretty much puts me and my shooter into the realm of Arnie and that Mini Gun he and the boys battled the Predator with ,,, besides that,, I gotta hunch that even just the sight of some beat up, worn out old man (or his wife) pointing such a machine in the direction of any thief looking for jewelry would probably have the same effect of sending them running without even firing a shot"
MonsterBiker Posted August 7, 2020 #14 Posted August 7, 2020 Surprisingly that is only a 10 round mag on the VEPR....them 12 gauge shells ain't small. 25 round drums are available for it, but it is expensive enough to feed with the 10 round mags, feeding a drum magazine would put me in the poor house. My VEPR is currently my primary castle defender, tucked between two dressers in the bedroom and loaded with 10 rounds of 00 Buck. On the dresser is another 10 round magazine of 00 Buck and a 10 rounder loaded with slugs, just for good measure. Note to all the thugs out there: my house is not a soft target. If you want to add more hoot to your shoot with the AR-12, have you considered a binary trigger? I have been considering getting a CZ Scorpion Evo with the folding brace and 50 round drum magazine. It would make a very compact, very effective home defender. With a binary trigger it would rival the full auto sub machine gun version used in Europe by the Police and military. Due to other demands on my paycheck, there is not one in my immediate future, but it is on my list of guns I would like to buy someday.
Jthomas Posted August 7, 2020 #15 Posted August 7, 2020 If your a vet and have base access, many Marine/AF/Army exchanges offer guns at good prices and tax free. I've seen shorter shotguns that are good for home defense at some of them. My 12 gage is a Mossberg 835. It's setup up more as a duck/turkey, but any shotgun will get the job done as a home defense.
SpencerPJ Posted August 8, 2020 Author #16 Posted August 8, 2020 You guys and your awesome guns 😎. I actually was at Walmart, bought a standard 870 express, and ordered a separate 18.5 barrel. All looks great, yet to shoot it.

Thing is with the AR12,, IMHO,,, the action is not fast enough to warrant the cost of a binary,, I can almost out run the action in just semi auto... 2 for 1 would definitely allow me to do so in the AR12.. The BCG is so much more massive in the 12,, kind of like one of those 20mm cannons on a Warthog being put into action I see Franklin has now come out with a Binary for the Ruger 10/22! I am currently thinkin I may need to pick up a 10/22 of some form to fill a void.. I do have a 22lr CMMG conversion kit for my AR15 so my long gun need for binary fun is met that way.. Maybe a Ruger Charger with binary would be the best as that would be a pistol with binary... Thinking I better get er done By the way,, anyone else thinking of Franklin Binary,, beware the tiny little spring that follows the front trigger assembly mount pin.. Just look inside the dowel hole in the lower receiver that the pin presses thru in the lower receiver when nocking pin in on assembly and help the spring up over the beveled edge of the pin when assembling lest you use up one of the two springs Franklin gives you for this purpose..

I know Walmart here no long handles guns,,,,,,, socialist/globalist cowards:usa: Nope, less than a month ago. Some Walmart’s inside city limits, Indy, do not. But a Walmart in rural Indiana had many, 00 buck shells too. I got a 18.5 barrel online, Carlson mfg, many good reviews, and fits well. Have not shot it yet. Busy out of state relocating a recent college grad to GA.

All looks great, yet to shoot it. I miss the days where Walmarts all over sold guns and ammo. I bought my shotgun when I turned 18 from one. It was cool still being in high school and having my own gun. When I had to go to Ft Worth Texas for a few weeks for the Navy, I felt like a kid in a candy shop when I saw Walmart stacked more than Dick's ever was. It was really tempting to at least buy a bunch of ammo at the cheaper price, especially .308.
RDawson Posted August 11, 2020 #22 Posted August 11, 2020 The Walmart here doesn’t stock guns anymore and has very little ammo. All the surrounding towns Walmart’s keep a good selection of long guns.

I was in Academy sports the other day and checked out the gun counter as is my habit.....I am pretty sure I have more handguns in my house than they have in that 40ft. long display case right now. Background checks to purchase firearms last month hit an all-time record high.

Same here on guns and ammo, what I should’ve said they only stock long gun ammo and very little of that even when it’s readily available. I went to an Academy yesterday and the only handguns they had were either revolvers or high dollar stuff, ammo shelves were near empty. Their fishing section was nearly as bad.

Maybe their marketing department is trying to justify their jobs....
