Venturous Randy Posted May 21, 2008 #1 Posted May 21, 2008 Not too long ago, a Sunday drive of a couple of hundred miles with a stop for a meal was about $25 or less. Now I am looking at a lot more than that. It may get to the point that the random rides that we now use as therapy may get fewer and farther between. What used to be a cheap form of entertainment is no longer that way and is getting worse. It is easy to justify using the bike for the needed transportation such as commuting back an forth to work. But, how about those times we hit the road just to ride, with no particular destination? Are we now being irresponsible with our resources just to get out and ride? RandyA
FROG MAN Posted May 21, 2008 #2 Posted May 21, 2008 Randya your right. Money is tight. The household budget has no room for unexpected extras. Were still waiting to see if out health care insurance premium goes up again this month. In 2 1/2 weeks were taking the family vacation at the beach. I have calculated at current gas prices $400 just to get the pickup and 5 people down there. I would love to ride the 84 down and back but thats an extra $165. Food prices are skyrocketing to so I have to make decisions based on keeping the monthly bills paid. Our county just passed a school bond legislation so next year the property taxes go up again.
Redneck Posted May 21, 2008 #3 Posted May 21, 2008 The therapy is worth the cost to me. If that is irresponsible then I will be irresponsible.
FROG MAN Posted May 21, 2008 #4 Posted May 21, 2008 Your right Redneck. I could cancel that expensive seafood dinner MamaMo looks forward to at the beach and go ahead and ride the 84. Thanks for the advice.:cool10:
ADC Posted May 21, 2008 #5 Posted May 21, 2008 Your right Redneck. I could cancel that expensive seafood dinner MamaMo looks forward to at the beach and go ahead and ride the 84. Thanks for the advice.:cool10: Gerald, What hospital will you be in,I'll want to send you a card:rotf:
Squeeze Posted May 21, 2008 #6 Posted May 21, 2008 Gerald, What hospital will you be in,I'll want to send you a card:rotf: Ah yes, has he made the Reservations yet ?? ?? :rotf:
Eck Posted May 21, 2008 #7 Posted May 21, 2008 I bet you I will get rid of the daily news paper, my cell "and or" home phone, cable TV, lawn care, my truck, cut my own hair, and even give up a few beers, before I give up my therapy..... (well OK, I'ld really have to think about giving up the beer.).. ..
whozleft Posted May 21, 2008 #8 Posted May 21, 2008 My wife and I decided NOT to take a vacation this year due to the rising costs of everything. I am sad to say my Venture hasn't even been started in over two weeks because I have a hard time spending the money to fill up the tank on the bike these days. My wifes Civic is our work transportation and gets just about the same mileage as the Venture. Since we ride to work together, it doesn't even pay me to ride separately just to ride the bike like I used to. We live about 32 miles each way from our jobs, so we save whenever we can. We will be riding with our frids from church, but I pick and choose what rides I go on more than I used to. The past couple years we were on the road every weekend doing something. But since the costs of food and gas are higher than before, a guys got to make decisions he may not always like. Ride safe.
royalstarjac Posted May 21, 2008 #9 Posted May 21, 2008 We might as well use the resources as we see fit as long as we can. If we don't use em the Chinese and Indians will. Does anyone think they're going to cut back?-Jack
RoadKill Posted May 21, 2008 #10 Posted May 21, 2008 I figure my rides are still way cheaper than a Psychologist/Psychiatrist and BELIEVE ME that's where I would be if it wasn't for riding. Even my wife knows that. I would probably get fired from work too cause I would tell them all off. I asked my wife if I should cancel some of my planned rides this year and she didn't even hesitate to say no way. Don't think she wants me around in the mood I would be in:2133: So in the long run I would rather eat crackers and peanut butter/bread and water:rasberry: than not ride.
Tartan Terror Posted May 21, 2008 #11 Posted May 21, 2008 Feeding a bike is hard enough try a Boat. Last year Dad and I bought a boat to do some fishing after Mom passed. Last year was bad enough but now I think I may just sit on the boat in the driveway and have a neighborhood kid spray me every once in a while with the garden hose!!! Very depressing!!!! It all trickles down and as less people drive I make less money as there is less of a demand for tires and the ones they buy are the cheap Chinese tires I always swore I would never stock and now have aisles full cuz thats what sells. CHEAP!
