Jeff said your carbs are probably out of sync and you should get a colortune. Now just call him to make an appointment. Don't forget the ice cream after.

I went through this at the end of the riding season last year with my 84. The bike was backfiring seriously on deceleration or when reving the engine while it was on the stand. It also idled rough. At the same time, I was having starting problems due to a weak battery. I put the bike away for the winter thinking that I would have to sort the problem out in the spring. I was thinking things like diaphragms, leaking exhaust system, carb-synch, etc. I bought a new battery this spring before going for a ride and presto, problem solved. The bike runs like a dream. No back-firing, runs smooth as silk with tons of power and idles smoothly. It is like a new bike. I don't know if this makes sense but, that is my experience. I had no idea that a weak battery could cause such performance deterioration. Your problem may be a different one but, if you are due for a new battery it would be a good idea to get one now.
