Venture tipped over

My Venture tipped over in a severe thunderstorm tonight....what should I check for after l uncover it and try and start it?

Since you have a 1st gen....comments I could make would be 2nd gen related.

But...

- did it go all the way over or did engine guards stop it part way?

- look at areas that came into contact with the ground. If it went all the way over, check signal lights, mirrors. If bags made contact with the ground check fairing and bags for cracks

 

Mechanically it should be fine. Primarily check what made contact with the ground. Other than that, you should be fine

If it fell on the right side, take a close look at the water pump elbow. It's very close to the engine guard and it will crack if the guard gets bent even a little. Other than that it's going to be body damage for the mos part. Bags, Mirrors, etc.

1st Gens never stop halfway down, when they take a nap they lay all the way down. Most likely damage is to the fairing and as mentioned the water pump elbow if it fell on the right side. The crack in the elbow can be very tiny and hard to see but still enough to be an intermittent leak.

It's a gen2....1989....but good call on the elbow...that's exactly what happened....is this repairable?

'89 is a first Gen. 2nd Gen was model years 1999 to 2013

While you have the elbow off.

You will likely also have the crash guard off.

Straighten out the bent tab that hit the elbow.

Then take a grinder to it to remove some of the corner that hit the elbow.

Squirt some paint on so the ground area wont rust (Iused the "chrome" paint from the hardware store). This will help to prevent the elbow damage the next time it takes a nap on the right side.

89 would be a 1st gen Mkll. Second gen is 99 and up.

A little after the fact here, but when storing a bike out in the elements and expecting high winds, it's best to have it on the side stand. If the wind comes from the left it's harder to lift an 800# bike, and if it comes from the right it will blow up and over. When it's sitting on the center stand it's basically balanced and can be blown over very easily from either direction... My 2¢
