I purchased an older Venture and have started repair to about everything I see that is not working and I hope I can get it ready for the 2020 riding season .

Had a bad clutch noise ...I replaced the bushings in the clutch basket and added newer springs in the pressure plate .

I still have what sounds like a bearing noise in behind the clutch basket .

Before I pull the engine out and start a rebuild , I had hoped that someone out there had run across this before and what it took to fix this .

If all goes well I want to have this Venture ready by mid may .

Hey Larry,

Welcome to the Forum! You and your First Gen. MKI Venture are home brother!

Needless to say, I haven't seen or heard your bike running, and you didn't mention the number of miles on it, BUT before I go to all of the trouble of pulling that engine, I would check out the WATER PUMP. It is actually on the same side of the engine, but when the bushing on the impeller starts to go that pump can get pretty noisy, and the clutch cover can act like an amplifier and make the noise sound like it is coming out of the clutch cover of the engine. If the noise doesn't change when you activate the clutch lever, BUT change when you rev the engine, then I would take a closer look at that water pump. The old piece of broom stick on the water pump cover, clutch cover, engine block, (or a decent automotive stethoscope) would do wonders to help you track down this engine noise. Just my thoughts, for what they are worth. If you have questions, please feel free to PM me.

Again, Welcome to the forum!

Earl

Noe Earl??? I thought that the water pump sat right beside the clutch,,, but then I'm only a butcher and tent to misplace things sometimes.

Hey Marcarl, you got me there buddy! I changed the first post to reflect that the water pump is on the same side as the clutch. Regardless of it's location, I still think he has a water pump issue, but thanks for setting me straight!

:sign yeah that::sign yeah that::sign yeah that::sign yeah that::sign yeah that::sign yeah that:Best of the best advice so far IMHO!

So on my MK1's I have experienced some pretty strange noises too.. Some I figured out and repaired, some I left and just rode er down to +250k miles just to see how much what ever was rattling could take.. I had what sounded like a bearing rattle related to the clutch on one once that ended up being the forward bevel gear bearing.. When that would rattle it would do so while the bike was sitting on the side stand idling but when I lifted the bike upright it would stop.. At first I thought it was quieting when I pulled the clutch in because, by learned behavior, when picking the bike up off the side stand I always pull the clutch in,, dorky I know but force of habit after having a bike take off on you when you bump the shifter while leaning the bike up can sure change a kids outlook of proper bike handling.. Anyway,, after a little toying around with it, I discovered the bearing noise to be a worn bearing = pull the forward bevel gear cover that you would pull to access the clutch slave = bearing under cover = I replaced that and it quieted right down.. This was an extremely high mileage bike - believe it had +175k when bearing failed.

On another one of my MK1's,, one that actually passed the 300k mark got real noisy at the end of its life.. This noise was similar to my clutch basket rattle,, quieted some with clutch pull and everything.. Get this,,, that one ended up being crank bearings!! Seemed, at least to my untrained ear, pulling in the clutch put enough pressure on the bottom end to actually quiet the loose crank bearings.. Weird eh? I discovered this noise while crossing Nevada coming home from CTFW along the west coast.. The bike made if home fine and never grenaded but it became a parts bike at journeys end..

On another one of my MK1's,, I did end up with clutch basket rattle that totally cleared up when pulling in the clutch,, noisy as heck = squeeze the clutch = quiet as a mouse eating cheese.. Found out the bushing in the clutch hub was out of spec,, grabbed one from a parts bike (MK1 I had retired), and bingo,, lots quieter..

*** having owned/ridden numerous non-unit scoots thru the years including my personal rider 78 Low Rider Shovel that I had converted to dry clutch and ridden several times across the desert regions vs all the unit bikes I have owned and ridden including my MK1's, in my case, I choose to stay with dino oils and change them when the oil darkens on my unit bikes.. The reason for this is that,IMHO, fiber plates tend to contaminate the tranny/clutch oil and on unit bikes that share that oil with the engine those contaminates can create engine bearing issues,, IMHO of course.. On the MK1 V-4's it is fairly easy to determine oil change intervals,, a quick glance at the little window - dark = stop at walmart or auto parts store and swap in new oil.. Sometimes 3k miles,, sometimes less..

What is the mileage of the bike?

What are you using to trace the noise?

Welcome to the family!

The Venture has been to east coast of Canada from Manitoba to Nova Scotia ..3 month trip pulling a camper trailer , and been on the road every year with a total of 160000 kilometers ...Engine runs great plenty of power ...The bushings on the clutch basket have .002 gap to shaft ( the noise was there before repaired the clutch basket )....I made my bushing driver ( line up driver ) in my metal lathe .

I have riding a XV1100 for 12 years , so this bike ...XVZ1200 is a big change for me ..
