Good Morning reddwarf19655!

First off, It's a Venture, not a Ventura(that's a Chevy;)).

Second the battery is an 18L. If your venture has the battery water level probe still intact, you will either want to get a lead acid battery and install the probe in the 3rd or 4th cell in place of the cap or if you go with an AGM battery you will have to either deal with the battery warning light flashing or do a simple modification with a rsistor to get the warning light to go away.

BTW, The '83 is a great bike even without second gear and you got it for a steal if it is at all rideable!

83' 2nd gear out at 32000. Usually they make it to 50000. I agree, $350, if it is ride able. Many shift from 1st to 3rd and beyond. Give it a try after you get a battery, they are great machines.

Ok, venture..had to fix the side stand first. since he ran battery cables to the trunk. I used a car battery. Jumped it. took a few minutes to start. Let it warm up. Road it down the street and back

.. skipped second had power in upper

Also had white smoke coming from the center drain hoses, temp almost red

White smoke would generally indicate coolant.

SO

Check where the hoses lead to, there's a bunch down there.

Check your coolant level.

Check the drain valve in the center of the lower rad in the front.

Many heat gauges will show almost red before the fan comes on, but check the fan as well.

Change the coolant.

Might be the water pump, put in the metal one rather than the plastic one it came with from the factory.

And you've only just started.

So, white smoke is not good from anywhere. But, please clarify where, exactly you see white "smoke"( is there any chance it's steam?)

The '83 will run right on the red line of the temp gauge. The fan should kick on when the needle hits the red. That is normal.

:think:Actually, its not a Chevy. "Ventura" was Pontiac's model name.:rasberry:

A Nova by any other name is still a POC:2cents:

Nova, Omega, Ventura, Appolo; Every broke teenaged motorhead's salvation in the '80s
