BigShell Posted May 15, 2008 #51 Posted May 15, 2008 I actually may have JUST found the problem. We'll see. Let me know if it seems better. I hope you found it... for the sake of your sanity! But just in case... I've never had a 'speed' problem. Looking at the sidebar, most of the modules would be identical for all users. The buddy list and ad module could be different. Lots of buddies or none... online or off? The ads could be the results of slow dns lookups on the users side or maybe they are being served by a slow server. I expect we don't all get ads served up from the same ad server. Can you turn these modules on and off and see what happens. Maybe activate one at a time if the problem is there? Just some ideas.
Freebird Posted May 15, 2008 #52 Posted May 15, 2008 Yes, that is what I was working on. I turned off the google ads to see if that helps. I'm thinking that it did.
Freebird Posted May 15, 2008 #53 Posted May 15, 2008 Right now, it takes me about 1.9 seconds to open this thread with the side menu on or off.
BigShell Posted May 15, 2008 #54 Posted May 15, 2008 Yes, that is what I was working on. I turned off the google ads to see if that helps. I'm thinking that it did. If it is ads, google does use cookies that might be worth clearing. One is google.com and the other is googleadservices.com. Might try deleting that second cookie and see what happens.
BuddyRich Posted May 15, 2008 #55 Posted May 15, 2008 Less than 2 seconds from index to this page out here in SF California.
az1103 Posted May 15, 2008 Author #56 Posted May 15, 2008 Sidebar off - instantaneous - less than 1/2 seconds! Sidebar on - 8 to12 seconds. Sorry to have started this pain in the butt for you/!
az1103 Posted May 15, 2008 Author #57 Posted May 15, 2008 By the way, I cleared ALL cookies - so that should be no problem.
Freebird Posted May 15, 2008 #58 Posted May 15, 2008 Well, at this point I'm going to just suggest that if it's too slow with the side menus on, then just leave them off. I enabled the Google Ads again and they only made a few milliseconds difference. You say that other pages open fast but I don't know what other pages you are talking about. This site loads a LOT of stuff when you open it. I have a plugin installed on my browser and just compared opening some pages here with opening some at some other sites and this one is faster than most that I checked. Don't know why the side menu is affecting you so badly.
Freebird Posted May 15, 2008 #59 Posted May 15, 2008 I made a few more changes over the night. I really don't know what else to do at this point but will continue to watch it. Now, even with side menus on and ads enabled, the threads are opening for me almost instantly...under 1.5 seconds. I honestly don't know how to improve much on that. Plus, I don't have a great connection here at the hotel.
Condor Posted May 15, 2008 #60 Posted May 15, 2008 Maybe it's time we invest in our own dedicated server.... I noticed a couple of slow loads this AM, and a couple of my smaller fav emo-cons had to be brought up with 'show pic'. Sometimes it's fast, and other times it's slow. No consistency.... I wonder if it's the current servers dedicated line???
Freebird Posted May 16, 2008 #61 Posted May 16, 2008 Condor, I do not have the expertise to manage a dedicated server. That means me configuring and taking care of all the root programs. Unix and etc. I just don't have the knowhow. Now here's another suggestion for all of you who may still be having speed problems. I think it has a lot to do with the external images being loaded on all the post pages. The more posts, the longer it will take. All our signature images, weather banners, images linked from another site, etc. will slow down the loading time. If somebody has an image in their signature that is linked from Photobucket or any other site and that site is running slow, it will take longer to load our pages. Same thing with images within a post. If you want to make it faster, go to your UserCP, Edit Options and then scroll down and deselect the "Show Signatures" and also the "Show Images". That means that you won't see the images but only links to them. You can try only disabling the sigs first if you want to. Don
Condor Posted May 16, 2008 #62 Posted May 16, 2008 Sent you an email responding to your post Don. Several times I couldn't access the site for long periods of time, ergo the email.. I still think it's the server. Basically I can tell when the board's available because I start getting email post notices. When I can't access, the notices are not being sent. I even got a couple of duplicates earlier.???
KeithR Posted May 16, 2008 #63 Posted May 16, 2008 (edited) I was having problems earlier today as well......I can get to the main page but could not open any of the forums. No problems on other sites at all or with my internet speed. (49 Members - 179 Guests) Edited May 16, 2008 by KeithR
Squeeze Posted May 16, 2008 #64 Posted May 16, 2008 had recurring Problems from 7 Hours ago, but after hitting Reload, the Board loaded but responded very slow. Six Hours ago, the Server was plain gone with Error 500 and 440.
Freebird Posted May 16, 2008 #65 Posted May 16, 2008 VBulletin recommends PHP5 as optimal for the software. I try to enable PHP5 and it will sometimes work for 10 minutes, last time for almost a full day. Then the page just quits loading for some folks, including me. I reported this to our host and they said it was not a problem. They re-enabled PHP5 and said it would be fine. I did not ASK them to re-enable it because I KNOW it is not fine. There is a problem. It was during that time that some of you had a problem. We are back at PHP4 now and it is working fine. I am not happy though. I'll be posting a new thread.
Condor Posted May 16, 2008 #66 Posted May 16, 2008 We are back at PHP4 now and it is working fine. I am not happy though. I'll be posting a new thread. At least 4 works Don. I did like some of the new styling on 5, but for all the grief it causes???
