Modular Helmet

I have a 3/4 and a full face helmet that I wear (one at a time of course) depending on the temperature, etc. But recently I have been considering a modular. Any of you ride with one and how do you like it?

I bought my first a few weeks ago. I like it and it is very comfortable even with it up or down. I bought the Fulmer. DOT approved and it was only about $150 at my local dealer. I had HJC's full face but kept having issues with my J&M speakers touching my ears and getting very uncomfortable after just 30 minutes of riding. Not a problem with the Fulmer. Plenty of room for the speakers. Very comfy.

I've been riding with a modular for a few years now.... all the benefits of a full face helmet for extra protection from the elements, but so very convenient when you are stopped and want to have a chat or just need some extra cooling. I have wondered if they offer the same face protection as a traditional full face helmet, but haven't seen any data on that one way or the other.

 

I will definitely buy modular helmets from now on!

I use the NOLAN modular. I like it.

Started out with an HJC modular - good helmet but you have to take a razor blade to the liner to put a headset in it.

 

No such problem with my Fulmer Modus. I like the protection and the convenience.

I have been using a HJC CL-Max modular for a solid year now, nearly daily. I find it very convenient since I wear glasses. Most full face helmets I tried are difficult to get my glasses back, besides trying to set them down on something each time I put on or remove the helmet. At the gas pump I can flip it up and comfortable work the pump/terminal. Long stop lights it is easy to flip up and talk to a neighboring biker, provided they can hear and talk as well as I can.

 

I have the boom mic and stereo headset (Yamaha standard) and was able to shave out the foam part way and slip them under the fabric with damage/alteration to the fabric. They do end up a bit higher than I would like to clear the chin strap mount.

 

Last week I tried on many helmets and tried the Nolans and many others. I was surprised to find that many fit OK for me, but the chin bars were brushing my chin, pretty tight for some reason, even the Shoei. The HJC gives me plenty of room. I do find that I get a cold chin since it does not have a chin deflector. My wife's Arai has a pull down chin bar, but is not a modular either.

 

I like the tilt up visors available on some now. I switch shields between clear with tinted eybrow stuck on it, and light smoke. Not as easy as some other brands, but tool-less and about 3-5 minutes for me to complete.

 

Some brands of modulars have a disclaimer printed on the chin bar saying it offers no protection (legal CYA). I have not seen any reports that tested them to full face standards. Another recent magazine review compared about 10 or so and noted such things as ease of use (latch, one hand or two required) latch construction (metal or plastic), foam in the chin bar, and of course the usual points like ventilation.

I got a VOX modular. I haven't had a chance to wear it but a time or 2. I had gotten it for cooler weather and it warmed up earlier than I thought it would. I like the fit though and it has the sun shield built-in AND you can flip it with one button..one handed. Runs ~$125 from Sterlingtek. I have been riding with an HJC Sy-Max helmet for 3 years, and I love it. All the protection of a full face, with the ability to "flip" the front for extra ventilation at lights, or long stops. I think it will be my helmet of choice for years to come.

I used to use a HJC SyMAX, wife is currently using a HJC CL-MAX. I do not believe ANY manufacturer has a modular that meets SNELL

 

Since my open face HJC AC-3 meets SNELL, why do the modulars not?

 

I really do not care about the snell. Just wondering!!!!!!

I have used a Schubert Concept for years. A bit pricey but the best on the market.

We've been using a number of flip-up helmets lately, and the Schuberth Concept motorcycle helmet certainly stands out from the others. First of all, it's a rather large helmet in terms of its overall size. On the plus side, this larger size provides for a rather spacious eye port area which is wonderful for those who wear glasses or suffer from claustrophobic tendencies.

The helmet has an unmistakable feel of quality, though this should be no surprise as Schuberth invented the flip-open helmet "concept" in 1978. Featuring a carbon fiber composite shell, the concept's interior is quite comfortable, not to mention removable for washing. The hinge mechanism is very secure in it's movement and the thick fog-coated face shield is anything but flimsy and has positive ratcheting positions, but no position to slightly open the shield to relieve fogging or to get a small dose of fresh air. Rather than a traditional "D" ring strap closure, the Concept helmet features a positive locking quick-release buckle.

Went to the sight,; watched the movie! That Evoline is SO cool! I love the way the jaw-bridge flips completely over the helmet. Now, if it was electric.................hmmm!

 

 

Actually, if they could incorporate the rear-view feature of the Reevu helmet, it would be perfect. These aren't available here yet, either.

I have a Nolan N Com with the flip down sunshade and the inner fog shield(the latter I haven't installed). I especially like the ratchet chinstrap, very fast on and off, and secure. Sunshield is especially good for goin thru a tunnel in beight daylight. It's supposed to be polarized. I had a cheap modular that the chinbar latch broke slightly after a year. The latch on the Nolan took a little while to get accustomed to, as you have 2 latch buttons to deal with, one to unlock the main latch, then lift the main latch, index finger first, then thumb. It's second nature now. One thing that I didn't like about the Nolan was there is no "D ring" to hang the helmet over a lock, so I had to fashion one.

I finally purchased a Sy-Max II modular helmet and do like it alot. The flip down sun screen is nice, even though I am used to wearing sunglasses when I ride. I installed the speakers and am in agreement that some trimming needs to be done. The speakers sure put a crimp on the ears! I found a great deal on the Sy-Max II at newenough.com and purchased it for $206. This was about $75 or so cheaper than anywhere else I found. Thanks for the info!
