geresti Posted February 12, 2007 #1 Posted February 12, 2007 I just finished with all of the mounting of my tour pak and now I need to run the wires for lights. My tour pak came with lights and I added leds to the bottom edges and replaced light bulbs with leds that can brake, signal, and be running lights. Any suggestions on wiring? I thought about under drivers seat but do I need anything special or just splice. Thanks for any tips. sarges46 Posted February 13, 2007 #2 Posted February 13, 2007 Running LED should work fine. I was wondering though, if you are going to need an adaptor to increase the resistance to the led's to make em work right. Someone will clear that up soon enough, after supper is done. I would think just straight splice would be good but it is always recommended to splice and solder to do the job right. BTW, very nice job...it looks great!
kantornado Posted February 13, 2007 #3 Posted February 13, 2007 Now that really looks nice. You did a nice job..........................................Ron
Guest helmer Posted March 2, 2007 #4 Posted March 2, 2007 What kind of rack did you use and how did you make it fit?
clay18 Posted March 2, 2007 #5 Posted March 2, 2007 thats real nice looking, how many folks have came up and asked what kinda harley is that?
Stoutman Posted March 2, 2007 #6 Posted March 2, 2007 That looks real nice. I have to echo Helmer's question: "Where did you get the bracket and how hard was it to make it fit?" Vendor names and part numbers would be very helpful. When I added lights to my bike I wired everything into the tail light assembly behind the brake light. The stock Yamaha wireing harness has bullet plugs that disconnect from the lights there. I bought matching male and female connectors and wired everything to plug into the stock wiring harness. That way I could unplug what I added, and I did not have to cut the stock wiring harness. It gets a little crowded in there, but everything fit OK. If you go under the seat you will have to cut the stock wiring harness. I did that to add my backoff flasher, which I mounted by the battery. Going with LEDs is a good idea. There is not a lot of excess electrical generation capacity on the RSTD/Venture. When I added my Harley brake lights I could really notice the drain when I would hold the brakes while stopped at a light. I put in LEDs and it seems much better.
Mean Dog Posted March 3, 2007 #7 Posted March 3, 2007 What kind of rack did you use and how did you make it fit? Helmer, I hate to keep plugging this site but, what these guys are putting together is amazing. It probably is making the Harley guys a little jelous though! http://forums.delphiforums.com/ultrastar/start Dog
Guest helmer Posted March 4, 2007 #8 Posted March 4, 2007 Thanks for the info Dog! I am posting something over there WOW their is a FORUM for just about eveything.
geresti Posted March 13, 2007 Author #9 Posted March 13, 2007 I used a rsv rack which fits on perfect to the rstd and just bolted the tour pak right to it. I found the rack on ebay but you can get one from yamaha too.. I spliced the wires under the seat and used a white sheilded coaxial cable I bought by the foot at Lowes and pulled out the insides and used that to put the wires into which you can hardley see since my bike is white. The cable only cost $1.05. I didn't need a load equalizer like they said I would at Scootworks. The turn signals work fine and so do all of the leds. I have since put on a set of road king pipes and they sound good and was easy operation. Now someone called my bike a "yamadavidson" Bob
berg Posted March 14, 2007 #10 Posted March 14, 2007 please help I have been wanting to do something like this to my rst 2006,Do I understand you correctly you used a harley trunk ? what did that cost you, and where did you get it ? Harley dealer ?The bracket is from a venture.?
Guest ohiojack Posted March 17, 2007 #11 Posted March 17, 2007 I installed a harley flh fairing on my 1997 royal star last summer. It has a radio caddy welded in with speaker mounts. I had bought a rsv trunk with all the speakers and mounted it to a rsv mounting rack. The fairing took some work to mount by it looks really good.
geresti Posted March 20, 2007 Author #12 Posted March 20, 2007 I got the harley trunk on ebay that came with the mustang studded backrest and the luggage rack and the lights. I ordered paint from Color rite to match my bike and changed the lights to leds. The trunk I got from ebay cost $600 which included shipping and yes the rack was from a venture. The rack bolts right on to the bike the same way it bolts on to the venture. You need to add a new bolt but there is already a hole there. You can't use the quick release anymore once you do this but I don't need to but after looking at the quick release you could possibly use it too if you want to do some welding. Bob
