kansa737 Posted September 12, 2019 #1 Posted September 12, 2019 I had a little adventure last night. we were going down a 2 lane and the rear brake started dragging. by the time i was able to pull off to the side, the caliper had caught fire. do you think the caliper can be rebuilt, or should i try to find another one? I've got to replace the rotor too, it got a little hot.
Drews Posted September 12, 2019 #2 Posted September 12, 2019 http://www.fallencycles.com brake caliper and the rotor $80.00 with 12000 miles on them:080402gudl_prv:
Drews Posted September 12, 2019 #3 Posted September 12, 2019 these guys are honest and really treated me fair
kansa737 Posted September 12, 2019 Author #4 Posted September 12, 2019 The only ones i saw on that site were for Gen 2 bikes. Did i overlook it? I've got a '93
suds Posted September 12, 2019 #5 Posted September 12, 2019 If you find one and do a rebuild, I highly recommend Brake Crafters ( brakecrafters.com ) for rebuild kits. They are high quality and the kits come with all the seals, copper crush washers and lube for safe reassembly. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
BlueSky Posted September 12, 2019 #6 Posted September 12, 2019 Yours may be rebuildable. I'd disassemble it and inspect it. And if the rotor isn't scoured or warped, it may be salvageable too.

Condor Posted September 12, 2019 #8 Posted September 12, 2019 I personally wouldn't mess around with a rebuild. Look on eBay and pick up a clean caliper and rotor. They don't go for much and DYI. Bet you probably toasted the bottom of the saddle too.... Been there..done that... The reason your rear locked up was the expansion hole pluged up with dirt or crystals and the hot fluid didn't have anypalce to go and started to apply the pads. The more the pads applied, the hotter they got and the fluid expanded more and applied the pads more... A downward cycle. My '83VR locked up tighter than a frogs ass. Luckily it was at slow speed. The bottom of the saddle bag did get toasted... Good luck on the repair... Bleed the brakes once a year and that usually takes care of problems...
suds Posted September 12, 2019 #9 Posted September 12, 2019 I'd read that they have a 15% off first order deal, is this still on?/Yes, I believe so. Even if you buy a caliper off Ebay, it may be wise to rebuild it because the seals may be old. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
OutKast Posted September 12, 2019 #10 Posted September 12, 2019 I know the R1/R6 calipers work on the front of your MkII. I THINK they work on the back also. You may want to search this site for info on this.
kansa737 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #11 Posted September 13, 2019 Looks like the rotor is salvageable, it cleaned up nicely with no signs of cracks or heat checks. I'll check the runout tonight, i left my axle shaft at home and the caliper looks good also, no scorched paint and the body and pistons are in good shape. Ive got a kit coming from brakecrafters
suds Posted September 13, 2019 #12 Posted September 13, 2019 I think you'll be pleased with the brakecrafters kit. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
kansa737 Posted September 17, 2019 Author #13 Posted September 17, 2019 Update : Everything went back together just fine. The rebuild kit from Brakecrafters was top notch, and i had no trouble reassembling the caliper. i got everything bled and went on a 150 mile road trip sunday. Everything is back to normal.
suds Posted September 17, 2019 #14 Posted September 17, 2019 That's great to hear! Glad you're back on the road! Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
