I had a couple weeks to go in tech school at Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Illinois. I had just received my orders for my next assignment and it was just 50 miles from where my wife was living with her parents in New Bern, NC. and was at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC. I was real happy about that.

On this day, we had a small B&W TV in the dayroom with a bunch of guys staring at a grainy picture of Neil Armstrong taking that giant leap for mankind. I remember that dayroom like I was in it yesterday.

It is hard to believe that now we are walking around with a phone in our pocket with more computing capability than what went to the moon.

What were you doing 50 years ago that you remember?

50 years ago, I was in the US Army stationed at a Nike Hercules missile site in South Korea repairing the radars and computer that computed the kill point for the missile. I didn't get to watch TV to see the moon landing. I was 25 yrs old and I could standing press 200lbs. Those days are gone!!!

Yeah, we are showing our age, but look at what OUR generation was doing.

No argument with that. Scares me what happening with this one.

Don't be 'scared' of this generation :-). I was 3 when the landing happened so I obviously remember nothing of it. I have 3 grown children and 2 grandchildren, my daughter is a successful business woman, both of my sons served in the Army, my oldest son was a nurse, is currently a Dialysis Nurse and has been know to save a life or two while my youngest was an MP in the Army and has started a career as a mechanic. I look forward to what they accomplish. Every generation has declared the following one sorry or scary but look at the advancements that continue to be made. Like the aforementioned phone in your pocket, we now have cars that drive autonomously (although safely can be debated), we have built on technology and lessons learned from previous generations. Yes we do slide back occasionally but we continue to rise and grow and build. Generation after Generation has continued to improve areas of the previous generations work. That is what is great about humanity. Our curiosity, our passion and our driven nature to be better. Yes we have our moments but we will always rise from our falls to be better.

I agree with all that, it's more the government and politics that scare me. The future of the next generations is what I worry about. That being said congrats on where your kids are, it starts at home. I hope the future of mine stays on path, I have one in med school to be a surgeon. and a senior in high school looking at aerospace engineering schools.

Sounds like our kids will handle everything just fine. We are the silent majority until we get ticked off enough then we set everything right. Aerospace is where it's going to be the next 50 years especially on the tech side. A lot was made with some of the NASA closings but I see all of that changing and privatizing. I'm sure you're super proud of both their hard work and accomplishments too. On the government and political side remember what they were saying about the 60's love children taking over politics and remember that our government structure has withstood some very poor leadership in the past - Jimmy Cater for example. I know all my kids are absolutely appalled by the Socialistic agenda of some of our politicians so I have faith that we will not fall into that chasm of futility.

Boy, y'all are showing your age. I wasn't born until 8 months after this.

I wasn't born till 12 years after this...

I maintain that whilst it's 'been done before' the sight of a man on the moon today would bring wonder and astonishment.

I was out of college and in Brookhaven, MS...helping a friend build a house for his wife's parent's. They never had an indoor toilet and we built a a 3 bedroom house with bath!

We listened to the mission on the radio. When they landed, we were watching it on TV.

I had my Yamaha YDS-6C. Rode it down from New Hampshire. Went to basic training after this summer and then rode the Yammie out to Luke AFB, direct duty assignment with the USAF.

I was grade school aged. My Mom and my Dad always made sure us kids were aware of events such as this. I remember watching it while sitting on the livingroom floor. I was a bit young to totally understand but did realize that the way *everyone* was talking about it, it must be a pretty big deal. Indeed it was!
