Chaharly Posted July 6, 2019 #1 Posted July 6, 2019 Getting a real nasty slow speed rumble that's definitely coming from the pumpkin. I'm gonna start tearing the rear wheel off and hoping that its something simple... Might have to order a new one from Ebay
rbig1 Posted July 6, 2019 #2 Posted July 6, 2019 wow sounds like a bad deal for a break down. Hope its something small. got fingers crossed. at least you have a center stand to use
CaseyJ955 Posted July 6, 2019 #3 Posted July 6, 2019 No way! Check Ujoints and bearings if nothing else appears. I just ditched my last spare pumpkin, if you are in dire need I'll pull my pumpkin and overnight it to you and you can get it back to me later on. I can always play with Maxine (Vmax) until then. I hope something simple presents and an easy thing to sort. Luckily these pumpkins are fairly common and not real expensive.
BlueSky Posted July 6, 2019 #4 Posted July 6, 2019 Man, I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it isn't that serious and you will be on your way pdq.
saddlebum Posted July 6, 2019 #5 Posted July 6, 2019 (edited) If your lucky it might just be a bearing. Some of the bearings simply have common bearing numbers on them making them somewhat available through sources other than Yamaha. the number is the actual bearing number the letters generally indicate open two sides, one side or fully packed and sealed and if sealed the type of seal. So in a pinch you should be able to find a bearing close enough to suit your needs if that is all you need. Bearings that are shot can crunch pretty loud and the pumpkin itself is generally pretty hardy and unless badly abused seldom fail. So Myself I would be leaning towards just a failed axle bearing if your lucky. Edited July 7, 2019 by saddlebum
Chaharly Posted July 6, 2019 Author #6 Posted July 6, 2019 Well guys it was my favorite type of fix. A free one. I pulled the rear wheel off, pumpkin off and the drive shaft out of the pumpkin. Everything looked good. I wasn't too excited to try to inspect the ring gear and i read that if you don't torque the pumpkin to the shaft housing just right it can kind of bind up. I put it back on the housing, got the nuts snug then started the bike, put it in gear and let it spin while i tightened them up the rest of the way. Put it all back together and the growl is gone! Thank you guys!

CaseyJ955 Posted July 6, 2019 #10 Posted July 6, 2019 Thank you so much! I really appreciate the hell out of that! No problem. I used to ride through Yellowstone and the Tetons in the off season. It's just too amazing for words, so much beauty. I was there during tourist season once and it was not a good time! It's no big deal to pull and ship a pumpkin to save someone else from that experience, even though I know almost everyone copes with traffic/crowds better than I. Besides it's not like we can buy these pumpkins at NAPA. Glad your back in the saddle and underway. Enjoy!
Sylvester Posted July 6, 2019 #11 Posted July 6, 2019 I applaud your skills and tenacity. :clap2: Ride on, brother.

Crazy amounts of people who shouldn't be on the road to begin with. It started making the sound again though. Idk i think I'm just gonna keep riding it
Kretz Posted July 6, 2019 #13 Posted July 6, 2019 'Scuse my ignorance what the h3LL is a pumpkin? (apart from those big orange things you make lanterns & pies out of!)
CaseyJ955 Posted July 6, 2019 #14 Posted July 6, 2019 'Scuse my ignorance what the h3LL is a pumpkin? (apart from those big orange things you make lanterns & pies out of!) Its a seasonal melon that can be carved into a scary face with a knife or a small caliber handgun, or the final drive unit of a motorcycle, or more accurately, the final drive unit that goes into a differential housing of a car/truck. Not the whole diff, just the carrier and R&P assembly.

Idk i think I'm just gonna keep riding it Scenes like that tend to awaken my inner child, which would be fine but my inner child is an empathic, misanthropic, hyper-vigilant, judgemental, intolerant, angry, cynical *******. Best to let him sleep through it if possible haha. I would have probably had a meltdown if I were there, unless I could bolt an IV pole to my bike and keep a continuous Haldol drip going. My normally good nature can go dark fast if I fail to see the signs and retreat to higher ground pronto. Knowing where you live and seeing the video I could deduce that you may not be enthused about the hordes of maniacs up there either, I would be remiss not to try and help out. I'm really glad you got away, hows the fluid in that final drive? Perhaps you could get some 140wt gear oil to offer a little more protection until you get home? It may quiet it down a little too. If your passing this way again and it's looking iffy then shoot me a call and we'll see if we cant get it sorted. There is plenty of room to camp and a shower if parts need to be sourced. I have a lot of paying forward to do so your well covered if you need to make a repair stop here.
Chaharly Posted July 6, 2019 Author #16 Posted July 6, 2019 Fluid was fresh 80/90w. I pulled into a Walmart parking lot, loosened the nuts again and now its quiet again. I almost hit a deer this morning, locked up the back wheel. Kind of thinking that sudden stoppage of the rear wheel moved something. And yeah not proud to say i was cussing at people, under my breath of course! People stopped for 2 miles in clutch crawling traffic for a picture of a DAMN buffalo! I can't believe these guys... On the plus side of things my bear count is at 7 now!

During Sturgis this whole region fills up with industrial grade arrogance and stupidity (actually its pretty full of that all year now). I stay home for the entire two weeks around Sturgis or ride on out of the area. This is an amazing place but it has become overpopulated and quite unpleasant. It's time for me to walk away. Southern CO looks pretty solid right now, I really liked many of the folks down there. Just gotta get way south of Co Springs and it's pretty darn alright. I'm going shortly to check out NM too. 7 bears, count me impressed, but your thumbs must be a real mess by now

Yeah the black hills get nasty this time of year for sure. I can handle it if it's not Sturgis time though. The traffic definitely flows better in the hills! Where u thinking in southern Colorado?

Last sept when I went down and hit Cripple Creek, (I'm a big fan of The Band so I recognized it's name) Beautiful but far far to many people on the roads. Still just stunning. I went through Hartzel looking at acreages over there, but again, too much traffic. This was odd because it looked like the dead and forgotten nowhere land that I'm looking for. I spent a couple days around Ft Garland and really liked it, and the few folks I met were cool. I took quiet a fancy to the 160 heading east from there. I'm heading back down this sept after PIP and will drop down into Taos and around the NM high desert. I hope to spend a few days wandering and maybe finding the right 10+ acres. I could be on the road for a couple weeks anyway, I hope the mighty Venture is up for it again. When I was in Ft Garland I stayed in a (the) motel and got to have a great time with some off-gridders (what I'll be doing) and cultivators (much less likely). They were all nuts and pretty cool to hang with. CO has a great feel but ya gotta be at the extreme southern/southeastern parts to escape the masses. The wide open spaces with the mtn backdrop are very soothing. I think it's the right place to go from here, plus my riding season would be considerably extended and great for solar and wind power. As usual I'll probably return to SD through the panhandle and avoid the 25. Nebraskans are always really cool too, had a good time in Scottsbluff last time I went through, and got a very impressive job offer. It's all a great adventure, I wish it never had to end.
Patch Posted July 7, 2019 #20 Posted July 7, 2019 Cha, does the bike roll back excessively when you park in gear and on the side stand? If so then you must address it, that would be the pinion and its trouble if it kinks and likely will lockup. If not then could be the bearing and an easy fix, just like what was mentioned take the stamped number off the existing one, easy find at the local Nappa Patch

When i had the final drive off everything turned real smooth and there wasn't alot of back and forth play. All the teetj looked good etc. I noticed it was doing it again in Idaho falls so i loosened the final drive again and retightened everything and it took care of it again. No more growl or noise at all. I think i may have shifted something between west Yellowstone and idaho falls because a deer jumped out in front of me and i locked the rear wheel up. Damn near hit him too! But now its absolutely silent and I've got easily another 1000 miles on with no further noise!

Wonder if the hard stop (s) are showing a sticky caliper?? Anyways stay safe out there and yep nothing quite like closing distance on an immovable or dead slow object, or like a combine, moose, geese out for a stroll, a fire hydrant on the wrong side of the curve, loose gravel just ahead of the perfect line thru a twist.... Ya gots to love the sport
Chaharly Posted July 9, 2019 Author #23 Posted July 9, 2019 The disc is slotted and occasionally makes a little noise but I've got no brake drag! I really can't explain the noise
CaseyJ955 Posted July 9, 2019 #25 Posted July 9, 2019 HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA, aaawww man!! Um... HAHAHAH, oh, HAHAHAHHA, wow, just wow. A few years ago I would have immediately thought this was staged for comedic effect. But now, after having seen all I have seen I would say I believe this is very likely authentic. She's obviously put a lot of thought into this. Awww man, I wanna meet this lady and take her out drinking to see just how this onion peels. I feel like there is a goldmine there somewhere. I want to ask her about politics and and...and HAHAHAHHAA. I'm guessing shes from NY or CA, sure not here. AAAWWW, if there were a hell I suppose I'd be going Still, HAHAHHAHAHA Thanks, I did need that laugh.
