Dieseldawg Posted May 4, 2008 #1 Posted May 4, 2008 I don't know if this has been covered before or not, so I'm asking. When you install RK mufflers on a Venture has anyone noticed that at the joint there is a exhaust leak?I put high temp silicone on the joint and used new RK clamps. The left side seems worst then the right side.I took them off several times and moved the clamp to different positions.Right now the bolt on the clamp is at the bottom and is covering the slits of the muffler at the top and bottom. Each time the mufflers were removed new high temp silicone was applied. Is this problem something that has to lived with or does anyone have a solution?
cecdoo Posted May 5, 2008 #2 Posted May 5, 2008 I just did the swap last week, I didnt use any silicone, and I dont have any leaks, The clamps I used came off my fishtails they are pretty wide but dont quite cover the whole joint. They do cover the slits though. I did get some stainless HD clamps on ebay and they are narrower. Mite be your problem:confused24: Craig
midnightrider Posted May 5, 2008 #3 Posted May 5, 2008 I too did a RK muffler swap last week. I used the stainless RK clamps (.75" wide) with no silicone and have no leaks. The clamps sit with the bolt low and towards the inside because I fit up the RSV stock covers that cover the clamp area between the header pipe and the RK mufflers.
Squidley Posted May 5, 2008 #4 Posted May 5, 2008 I have done several of the swaps and never had an exhaust leak. I clean the header pipe on the bike with some emory cloth before I install the pipes onto them and it's a tight fit. The clamps I use are spesifically made for mounting Harley pipes on metric cruisers. They can be purchased from V twin mfg and are part # 31-9920 Here's a set on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=350055072927&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:PIC&ih=022
royalstarjac Posted May 5, 2008 #5 Posted May 5, 2008 You are sliding the mufflers as far as they'll go onto the header pipe, right? It should be a tight fit. You may have to grind the weld on the header pipe down to get them to slide on far enough.-Jack
Dieseldawg Posted May 5, 2008 Author #6 Posted May 5, 2008 Squidley I could not open the link.Is there a web site for V twin manufactoring were you can order the clamps from?I looked them up and it seems you have to be adealer to order direct from them. Also does anyone think that my problem might be the result of useing the high temp silicone?
Ponch Posted May 5, 2008 #7 Posted May 5, 2008 I just ordered a set from Zoom Cycles. Call them. Their website is not to friendly for ordering. http://www.zoomcyclellc.com/ZoomCycle/Zindex1.html
Dieseldawg Posted May 5, 2008 Author #8 Posted May 5, 2008 Thanks Ponch just called to order a set.I wanted wider clamps anyway.I'm still wondering if the high temp silicone is the problem?I'm going to check to see if they are all way up also.
