Jeepinillini Posted February 24, 2019 #1 Posted February 24, 2019 Unfortunately, I dropped my 88 VR bike on the throttle side 🙁. Broke the top part of the fairing by the mirror mount. There is other minor cracks/chips on this side. I am considering buying a replacement (preferably burgundy color). Should I bite the bullitt and replace it or is it worth learning fiberglass repair on this old of a fairing? Thanks for any suggestions or parts. I am up to date on EBay and watching a couple of decent ones.
MiCarl Posted February 24, 2019 #2 Posted February 24, 2019 I've got a friend that needed a fairing half. He noticed a fairing stay on eBay that had the fairing he needed still attached for $20 and bought it. It cost him more in shipping than he paid for the parts but he ended up with a sweet deal on the fairing. Lesson is, don't restrict your search too much. No telling what someone might give away.
Marcarl Posted February 25, 2019 #3 Posted February 25, 2019 There is no real telling of how good a used piece is, and once you get it in stock, will it be any better. I would keep an eye out for a replacement but in the meantime I would proceed to see how nice a repair I could do on the present one. Either way, the one you have needs to come off, so once that is accomplished all you need to do is fix the pieces back together and then decide if the effort was worth it. I would not use fiberglass though, I would go with Plasti-fix. https://www.amazon.com/Urethane-Supply-PlastiFix-Kit-Clear/dp/B0007LTXVY https://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php?s=plastifix&x=0&y=0 If it were me, and I did this, I would buy the larger kit from Aircraft Spruce. You'll find lots of things that will be helped with this stuff.
videoarizona Posted February 25, 2019 #4 Posted February 25, 2019 Repairing your fairing is easy. Multiple ways to do it. I've worked on mine and the repairs are stronger than the original. There is a ton of info in this site in older posts....search away and enjoy the learning. It's really not hard at all. Honest injun....grins.
cimmer Posted February 26, 2019 #5 Posted February 26, 2019 There are some complete fairing pieces on Ebay now that might be the way to go for the cost of them. Check out this one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/83-85-85-84-YAMAHA-VENTURE-XVZ12-XVZ1200-headlight-FAIRING-COWLING-UPPER-right/223420530823?hash=item3404e6c087:g:hSUAAOSwRTxcSwif:rk:12:pf:0&vxp=mtr Hope this helps some.. Good luck. Rick F.
