IMHO, Fool is a true blue, genuine "BUILDER" while many of us, myself included, in taking parts and pieces and putting a shooter together are "ASSEMBLERS".. I went thru that discussion many times over the years when attending the Sturgis Rally and yakking with other builder and assemblers there concerning Choppers. When the Chopper craze hit and the flood of Cookie Cutters hit the market - "Assemblers" became numerous and "Builders" became very scarce..

I HIGHLY commend that lop eared White Washin varmint Flyinfool for his building endeavor and share in the joy he speaks of in putting the time in (and I KNOW building anything can be time consuming). WAYYY COOL FOOL!!

On the other hand though,, for those of us who are retired, have no longer got the use of worn out ol hands (and minds in some cases), have sold off machinery needed to make chips or tig up a mount but our lead tossing days are still not done ,, turning into an ASSEMBLER can be fun too ..

 

A perfect example,,, this is what I would rate really simple assembly.. PSA recently ran a sale on their complete uppers (if you wanna keep it as simple as possible when assembling an AR,, make sure the Upper you purchase comes with the Charge Handle and the Bolt Carrier Group).. PSA's lowers were on sale a couple months back for CHEAP. Fold the hammer back on the reciever so it's in the Cocked position, flip the safety to ON, push the two receiver pins over to allow the upper in, drop the upper into the forward pivot pin location and push the pin in, pivot the upper into alignment with the buffer and push in the rear pin. Slide in a magazine and WHALA,, instant AR47..

Did you purchase a .308 AR 10 lower that was 80%, and have to drill and mill it? Or are there completed lowers availble?

GOOD ?'s my brother!! The AR10 lower is pretty much a completely different varmint as, amoung other things, its magazine well is HUGE compared to the AR15 magwell. The AR15 lower in it's competed state (trigger group, stock) is one of the most versatile known to man,, IMHO of course. While the AR10 lower receiver does have a pretty good barrel/caliber selectabilty without having to go wildcating (22/250, 7 mag, 06,,, AR10? Ohhh yeahh) , the AR15 lower to upper compatibility and choice of "builds" is actually amazing. As I am sure you know, because the 556 is actually a 22 caliber - I did a drop in BCG (Bolt Carrier Group) 22LR with no barrel/upper swap, when you hear someone say they are shooting an "AR47" they are referring to and AR15 with a 7.62x39 (famous AK47 round) barrel that they swapped out into the upper receiver OR they just grabbed a x39 complete upper with the matching BCG and snapped it on a regular mil spec AR15 complete - unaltered lower receiver which is what I did above. The AR47 magazines are drop in ready (and cheap!!) and plentiful with no adapters or machining reguired on the AR15 lower to accept them. The AR47 is gas operated just like the 556 but, obviously it does take a totally different Bolt Carrier Group.

You may see me do an AR9 in the near future as I find cheap auction parts to build with like I did with the AR47. Same thing here Sly in that the "AR9" refers to a 9mm barrel swap or a complete upper with a 9mm BCG. The 9 is a blow back shooter (just like your ol LEO 9's) so the gas block on the BCG will be "fake" and just be blocked off - .45 ACP, 40 smith, 357, 17 HMR and on and on same thing. All of those require magwell adapters to adjust to the smaller caliber mags but the AK47 does NOT. The Standard "AK" mags (nor SKS MAGS) will not work in the AR15 lower though,, they gotta be AR47 - AR15 mags. 300 Black out, 224 Valkerie and the like can all sit on AR15 lowers too.

One of the things to be sure and look ahead about when talking putting together one of these puppies, again - IMHO, is hi cap mag availability.. Having always been on those lop eared belt feed kind of varmints and never in million years being able to afford being able to own (and shoot) a real deal water cooled belt feeder,, I gotta have Drum Feed availability for my AR's or I lose interest in em...

I even did advance research on my AR12 (12 gauge shotgun - THANG IS AWESOME FUN) into drum feed for it before I went that route. There are plenty of AK platform 12 gauges that already had a drum feed for em but the AR platform did not so I was hesitant.. A couple phone calls and I found out that the manufacture was planning on releasing the drum feed this year and so was ProMag. I just notice they were not kidding,, ProMags is out now..

With the AR9 a person can find Glock adapters fairly easy (not cheap though, about 60 bucks) that opens a WHOLE magic world of being able to use GLock mags which,, WOWZY WOW WOW,,, WAYYYY COOL LITTLE HI CAP DRUM FEEDERS :dancefool:

It's a nostalgia piece for me. I qualified expert at the Cape May Coast Guard Recruit Center with one just like it, as well as spent a lot of time on the parade field with it. Luckily never had to fire one at anyone.

Got this through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (http://thecmp.org/). Was actually very easy (and I live in Massachusetts), especially if you are current or ex-military. It's the lowest operable grade -- Field Grade 1, I think. $650 delivered to my door, along with a nice case. The key is you have to be "associated" with an organization that has a relationship with the CMP. Most are ranges and gun clubs, but the simplest I found is the Garand Collectors Association (https://thegca.org/). They are nationwide and you can get a one year membership online for $25. Worked for me.

Now, having said all that, I have not fired this beast yet. Looks to me like all the parts are there, and in good working order. No nicks on the muzzle, the barrel looks to be in good shape and the bolt appears to work fine. I'm taking it to my son's place in Virginia in a few weeks and hope to test fire it there. The stock looked to have old cosmoline on it; not real bad, but was a dark, slightly tacky finish. I'm in the process of refinishing it now.

That "CMP" group is the one I was thinking of! A bunch of us put in for the "Random" on the 1911's and a really good friend of mine actually ended up with one:guitarist 2:!! I actually watched those Field Grade 1 Garand's with eagerness too... IMHO, those were/are the closest to the real deal (something I cherish), I share HUGELY in your enthusiasem about aquiring such an honored and treasured piece my friend = BEAUTIFUL!!!

Was it "luck of the draw" that you ended up with a Springfield or did you have some connections working to your advantage brother? That Springfield is the most desirable IMHO... Would LOVE to see more pics of it my friend!

He set up a club "Honor Badge" system whe re you go in and claim your badge.. Unlike our other awards which we can nominate each other for though, I think as a recipeint you have to claim your own badge to get the one you have earned (Don,, if your reading this and I am wrong about not being able to request one for a Veteran = please correct me..). To recieve the proper badge, just go to the top of any page in the forums, look to the right and locate the "awards" icon, click on it and scroll down to the Military Service section. I understand your frustrations on the .17. Not my cup of tea but have friends that love them. .22 mag. works very well for me and since I am retired I have to live with what I have. Back to my hunting...was raised and hunted Nebraska until 36 years old. Nebraska is range country and a shot at a white tail is either 200-300 yds (using a .30/06 accelerator, or if in what little tree stand area you hunt then my .45-70 worked well. Now I live in North Carolina which is covered in trees, therefore the 7.62x39 is great with 100 yd. shots a far shot. The .45-70 would work great but at my age the recoil and blast is more than I can take.

Speaking of the .17 HMR,, that is the caliber that kind of led that path to my going AR.. Wanting an affordable long range target shooter WITH affordable and not wanting to return to the hassles of reloading to make ammo affordable,, I eagerly followed the Ruger attempt at producing the 17 in semi auto.. It didnt work.. Then, not to long ago, Savage came out with the A17 that I had watched for a longggg time but was just not able to locate one for what I could put a center fire 556/223 Wylde chambered AR for and,, a little research and resolve turned up 223 ammo for almost exactly the price of .17 HMR... While I still have HUGE DREAMS of someday night hunting Coyotes and all that (never did it but have ALWAYS wanted to = thinking squeekin in a Coyote and locating/takin em out thru the Night Vision would be nothing short of REAL FUN), fact is,, physically I am thinking that dream is probably going to stay nothing more than a dream and if I had a Night Vision Scope it would end up hanging next to my Recurve and Compound Bow, Tree Stands, boxes of Arrows I fletched up years ago and all that stuff... I ABSOLUTELY DO appreciate you filling in the gaps of want though brother!! PLEASE keep the faith, keep up the good work and PLEASE keep the stories w/ pics rolling in here in Hotel California country!!!

FOUND IT!! Spent some time out playing with our brand new 4x4 trail busting lil dozer and found the PERFECT spot for tossing 308 or 556 lead out to +1000 yard (according to my Range Finder) and busting all the clays we want!! I am gonna try a google map link for everyone here,, lets see how this goes.. You should see two HUGE open land fields - one on one side of a two track and the other on the other side.. If this works,, all my lop eared VR brothers and sister varmint friends will now know where to find Tip and I should we not be home when you stop by for a hot dog:missingtooth:...

I met with one of our Upper Management "Puc's Meet Greet n Eat Meat" Staff members today and things are REALLY looking good for the 2019 Puc's MGnEM season.. We had some left over Dogs in the Freezers BUT decided to toss em and grab all, BRAND NEW,, 1/3 pound dogs so those puppies (pun intended) should REALLY grill up to perfection!!!! Keep your lop eared Hot Dog lovin eyes glued to the Water Hole my friend cause as soon as we get a break in the weather,,,, The Hot Dogs are gonna be just FLYING off the grills!!!

Sadly,, the only shootin of the AR's I/we have done so far (this FOUL weather has been KILLING US) has been 2 boxes of 12 ga thru the AR12 (Tip shot most of those though as I was trying to determine whether or not she needed an AR of a traditional shotgun for her own shooter) and a few hundred rounds thru the AR15 with the 22lr CMMG conversion kit dropped in it to test the kit (ran great).. Sly,, I am sitting on a HUGE variety of ammo for both the 556/223 and the 308 for "testing" to see what each of them prefer both for accuracy and in feed. LOTS of Steel and Brass. Been shopping and buying off auction all winter and,, to be truthful,, am getting down right ornery with this weather... I WISH I could report something different my brother but these old bones just dont handle the cold like they used to..

Once the weather breaks and the fun begins,, would you like pics, vids and story telling time about such? Is there something that you would like me to do for fun AR "testing"? Dont be a shy Sly,, if ya got something you AR curious about,, let me know and I will do my best to give it shot (another pun intended)..:thumbsup:

Sly,, I grew up hunting public lands (you know,, lands that are owned by We The People) and learned the ends and outs of that business from my deceased Father (I inherited his 300 Savage,, its an old 99E Lever Action that my Mom bought for him brand new for their wedding gift - when I was 6 years old my dad started taking me Deer Hunting with him on public land and I can still remember how HUGE that 300 was to my little eyes - IT IS A TREASURE CHEST FILLED WITH GREAT MEMORIES OF SOME AWESOME TIMES WITH MY FATHER - someday I will dig it out and snap some shots for our thread here).. I hunted those Northern Michigan lands very successfully and even took my family on MANY hunting outings (both bow and gun) with me on them - we used the lands we owned.. About 12 years into raising my family on a small 10 acre piece of land in rural Michigan I grabbed a large piece of property with an old house on it north of Ravenna Mi that was SURROUNDED by thousands of acres of State Land. We raised our kids there with snowmobiling, dirt biking, trout fishing (one of Muskegon's best Brookie Streams ran thru our property) and hunted EVERYTHING from Rabbits (kids each had a Beagle) to White Tail right out our back door...

The only down side I found (other than living on 5 miles of gravel road - when the kids got older and started driving fixing cars became a FULL TIME JOB!!) with the picture I just painted was that people REALLY had NO respect for our private land - even though it was clearly posted.. I, myself,, didnt even bother hunting our private acreage as I never really cared for the idea of a stray round goin thru the house.. I did have a "bait pile" (in Michigan bait piles are legal) on our property and tree stands over it BUT that was strickly a go to place for the kids = my kids had over 30 deer "named" and many many late nights, my oldest daughter would not come in till wayy after dark as she REALLY enjoyed just sitting out there and watching the deer play and listening to them after dark = all another VERY good reason why I REALLY DID NOT WANT TRESSPASSERS WITH GUNS OUT THERE.. I never actually did shoot a deer on our land,, having been raised on public = I always LOVED and enjoyed the freedom of hunting public and I did so even when living there...

As time went on,, the burden of owning/insuring/monitoring/tearing down blinds/fixing cars and on and on just got to be more of a hassle than it was worth.. I had one group of guys who I had to chase off our property numerous times a year - nothing could convince them that "State Land Hunting" can be just as good and rewarding as private land can be (actually,, IMHO its better but ONLY if you know how to work it, scout it, plan it = HUNT IT) and that was very frustrating - sort of took the joy out of owning private IMHO...

A quick ride up (trusty Iphone says 8hrs), a few dogs, and a nap before heading south might just be what the dr ordered. Well actually the dr is trying to tell me I'm nuts for trying to get back on in the next couple weeks. He's wanting me to wait 6-8 more weeks. At 1130 miles round trip I could possibly turn it into a 1500 the next day.

PERFECT TIMING Corporal Newkirk = PERFECT!!! Our decent riding doesnt even start up here in Michigan until late spring,,, July 1st. I may sneak some MGnEM's for the locals (of course,, these events are open to all BUT brrrrrrrrrrr and WOWZY,, WET TOO,, I sure wouldn't chance riding up here from out of State for a Hot Dog any earlier at this point in my life if I was coming up out of those warm southern states BUT,, last year videoarizona did come up for Maintenance Day and did fine I believe = he is much braver than I though).. July through August though,,, MICHIGAN is THE place to ride and I know ALL the great riding adventures here!! Matter of fact, our home is located right at the beginning of the prettiest, cool roads available for CTFW! My kids and Tip have all been cross country many times on a Venture with me,, camping and chasing back and forth thru National Parks and the like and my youngest daughter is absolutely convinced in her mind that our "Tunnel of Trees" on the Northern CTFW route is the coolest CTFW adventure anywhere in the States = that is why we call her "TOTR" (Tunnel Of Trees Rider)..

Give your shoulder time to heal, watch for a July or August Puc's MGnEM, ride up, enjoy a day of Hot Dogs with all the fixens, travel light and stay here at the house for a couple nights and enjoy some of Michigans FINEST while here.. Go home FULL of Hot Dogs and great Michigan adVenture memories...

Drums are a testoserone for men. I have a 100 rnd. drum for my AK47, and loaded it is HEAVY and not useable shooting off hand. Actually it is too heavy to cradle and fire. Only good use is with bipods. I keep it for future sale value. Even with the 30 rnd mags it is a handful. I use 10 rnd mags and that works for me.

BUMP until we can get Puc back. No fun without him. I am still praying Puc. I am not a church going Christian. Raised Catholic and all the politics and do this's and then they changed all those rules. Have friends from other denominations and even a Presbyterian pastor that have quit. I say this because I went in a church yesterday to say prayers for your brother. I figured it wouldn't hurt and maybe Jesus on the cross heard me better there. Don't remember the church affiliation.
