I have an 83 Royale with an 86 engine. The other day I was doing the clutch master cylinder and broke the tab that keeps the clutch switch in place. It seems to me that the switch only disengages the cruise (which doesn't work anyway) and allows me to start in gear. Is there any other function for this thing or can I just leave it off and always start it in neutral?

That will work but I consider it a bad idea. If you ever stall in traffic you'll have to find neutral before you can restart. While you're doing that the drivers behind and around you are apt to start doing dumb things that could lead to you being hurt.

I'd suggest you either chase up a used one or rig up another method to retain the switch.

Or you could just buy THIS ONE on eBay for $28 shipped.

Thanks MiCarl. That's a pretty good point, would hate to find myself leading out for a left turn and suddenly needing to fiddle around finding neutral. I have a couple ideas for keeping the switch in it's hole, if they don't work I'll either buy that one or maybe just splice a manual switch into the line that'll be easier to flip than finding neutral. Thanks again.

Awh hell no.... you don't need another stinking switch. Jus wire it in with your brake lite switch. That way, you not in neutral but you have the brakes on and the starter don't move the bike... no. Simple... OR, wire the neutral switch in with the high beam switch, that way they see you comng when you rolling with the starter in 3rd gear and hit the lights...

..ell me an youse we got this covered.

Mine is under a frozen cover so I cant look and see what your referring to but I have a loose recollection. Can it be repaired with JB weld or some type of epoxy? Some of these 2 part products are pretty darn good. I'm going with the school of thought that alternative wiring may well be less than ideal. A pic of the broken bit may help spur some ideas if nothing else works.
