I have noticed there are a fair amount of gun enthusiast residing hereabouts. I wonder if there are any edged weapon enthusiast as well?

 

I'm a bit of a collector and knife maker my self. I'm really at the dabbling level as a maker but I am all in as a collector and enthusiast.

Very nice. One upon a time, many years ago, I was an avid collector and also sold knifes. I had accounts with most of the USA manufacturers as well as many of the German brands. I sold a LOT of knifes for several years. A lot of Case, Buck, Parker, Schrade, etc. but my favorites were the German brands. Hen and Rooster, Boker, Fight'n Rooster, Kissing Crane, Puma, many others. I still carry a Fight'n Rooster which was my choice out of them all. Broke my old one but finally found a new/old stock a few months ago and was able to replace it. They are no longer in business.

 

I did make a couple of hunting knifes, primarily out of old saw blades with various handle materials but I really didn't have the patience to do them justice. In regards to hunting knifes though, a lot of guys carried all sorts of big/bulky knifes but the one I always carried and field dressed and skinned many deer with was a little drop point that was made by Case. It was called the "Lil' Devil" and I loved that knife. They don't make it any longer and I have no idea what happened to mine.

 

I was working at a Power Plant in Texas during those years and with about 800 or so men working there, I sold knifes every payday. There were always guys needing a new one and also a few that I had gotten into collecting. Shortly after leaving that job and then traveling way too much, I ended up selling off my collecitons.

You have some nice pieces. As mentoned previously, my favorite sheath knife was the Case Lil' Devil. I love stag though and always intended to have a nice stag handle put on one. Never got around to it though and don't hunt any longer so really don't need it.

WOW Rich, what a nice collection! I love the "rustic" look of some of the home made ones. Being a tool maker, I have made quite a few knives over the years. In recent years, I have gotten into "Bone and Flint" knives just to get out of my comfort zone. Below are a few examples of my most recent creations. Buck horn handles, hand knapped blades, and on the one knife, I hammered a Buffalo Head Nickel to fit the butt of that knife. The assembly of this type of knife is very different than a metal blade. You could by no means call either of these knives a "work knife", or even a daily carrier, but believe it or not, they are razor sharp, and very durable. Alas, a bit "fancy" for every day carry.

On another note, I was cleaning my .480 Raging Bull over the weekend and thought you might enjoy a pic of that weapon as well. I apologize for getting off topic with stone knives, and Raging Bulls!

Keep it up; nice to have a 'Breather' every once in a while. Some absolutely beautiful work here; kudos to all.

 

Personally, we're hiding in the Bushes, waiting for 'The Dronies' to pop back up. We KNOW you're out there.

I admit there is nothing special about this knife, other than the story of how it became mine...

A few years back I made a trip up the Dalton Highway all the way to the Arctic Circle in Alaska.

About a mile off the Dalton at a Magnetometer site, where I was to deploy my GPS based Ionosphere measurement system, there she was just lying there sheath and all!

 

It's my favorite and go to knife till this day.

I love Kershaw's blades. That is a great design and a great story to go with it.

I have a roll-away with knives scattered in each and every drawer. Just like my gun collecting I like the unusual and unique... something that makes them a little different... However my favorite that I've carried for over 40 years is an old 4621 Frontier... It's a big folder and it went with me where ever I went until the last 10 years or so. Now it sits on my desk and is regulated to cutting up muffins or opening envelopes.. I have 4 grandsons that want me to will it to them when I won't be using it any more.... :-)

I can't hold onto a knife long enough to invest in top quality pieces.

But, this thread reminds me of a story from my youth (I was probably 8 or 10).....My dad was a machinist and he used to like making simple knives and machetes. He made the machetes out of industrial motorized hacksaw blades that they'd use in the shop. He made a pretty nice one with a white nylon handle, and when we were on vacation in the camper, he took it with us.

We'd parked the camper on a side (dirt) road somewhere down south, and Dad and I went for a walk down this dirt road, and he let me carry the machete. I happened on a fallen log and took a whack at it with the machete and broke it clean in half.....I'll never forget the look on his face....

NO....I didn't get in trouble....I don't think he ever used those saw blades again...too hard and brittle....

Saw blades and files are great steel for knives but you do have anneal them then heat treat them properly.
