RDawson Posted November 17, 2018 #1 Posted November 17, 2018 I just saw this video about trailer dynamics and tongue weight. It does a pretty good job of showing the importance of proper loading. It doesn't really show tongue length and axle location differences though.
BlueSky Posted November 17, 2018 #2 Posted November 17, 2018 Yep, very important. That is why you have to be careful with a toy hauler. Adding weight to the usually rear of the trailer could induce dangerous sway. I was working with this engineer in FL. He thought he was a lot smarter than he was. Anyway, he hauled a load of household furnishings back to his IN home with a uhaul trailer and he was complaining about that terrible uhaul that would start swaying if he got above 55mph. I had to break the news to him that it was his fault by not putting enough weight on the tongue. Geez, I disliked that guy!
videoarizona Posted November 18, 2018 #3 Posted November 18, 2018 When I first towed my sailboat (4200 lbs), I had sway issues. Added 2 anchors/chain and rode up in the V-berth and good to go for the past 14 years. I'm also being careful with my TT. There is a towing difference between empty gray/black water tanks and full! Yessiree. Both of my tanks are in the rear, when full, she's a different beastie entirely!
