uhfradarwill Posted September 20, 2018 #1 Posted September 20, 2018 I decided to do a night loop tonight to test the new center line marker/right shoulder deer/moose lights. It was a clear 60 degree night with calm winds. My 89VR was running in spectacular fashion. All in the world seemed to be in balance. I made a stop and was admiring my ride when it hit me... What the heck am I going to ride when this bike worn out or dies a horrible death? It's old now and parts are going to be more difficult to find going forward. There is now way I'm going to pay $20K+ for a new bike that I don't like as much as this 1st gen!! Oh well I'll maintain her as best I can and hope we have a long life together!
Flyinfool Posted September 20, 2018 #2 Posted September 20, 2018 It takes around a quarter million miles to wear out a fist gen you know.
Graywulf Posted September 20, 2018 #3 Posted September 20, 2018 2nd Gen's aren't a too bad an option surely?
Condor Posted September 20, 2018 #4 Posted September 20, 2018 Take a Valium and check back with us in the AM......
saddlebum Posted September 20, 2018 #5 Posted September 20, 2018 (edited) All I can say is with an 89 you don't worry about what could happen but smile about the miles of joy behind you and keep going until you can't. I road tested the new 2018 and as nice as it was with all its fancy stuff which I really don't care much about, I saw no reason or enough, if any, ride improvement to replace my 89. I'll keep her going as long as I can. As far as parts go, well were there is a will there is way. Edited September 20, 2018 by saddlebum
BlueSky Posted September 20, 2018 #6 Posted September 20, 2018 Well, Cowpuc is riding his 6th first gen after running the first 5 over 200k miles. So, I would guess there will be lower mileage Gen Is out there for a while longer. Mine only has 6k miles on it. It's been sitting mostly since I bought it and I need to remedy that situation.
Patch Posted September 20, 2018 #7 Posted September 20, 2018 Jeez man - by the title I thought maybe you were sideswiped by a meteor or the Enterprise in hot pursuit of... "What the heck am I going to ride when this bike worn out or dies a horrible death?" It's all that rubbing you do to her that's going to ware her down first, not the riding! You might consider applying friction creams to this tender loving behavior or add a girlfriend to your backseat maybe... Will

Will lol Well I have a wife of 24 years but she is low maintenance; sometimes my mind wanders.
Patch Posted September 20, 2018 #9 Posted September 20, 2018 lol Well I have a wife of 24 years but she is low maintenance; sometimes my mind wanders. Perhaps then, plan a picnic, take your wife on the bike, bring a tent, walk time back a bit, just don't let Old Blue see you two smooching, these old girls can be territorial!
