Bob K. Posted September 20, 2018 #1 Posted September 20, 2018 I've read through about 10 years of Venture clutch chirp threads and I'm probably hoping beyond hope; however, have there been any new solutions for the 1st Gen clutch chirp (aka Jetson Syndrome)?
ChiefGunner Posted September 20, 2018 #2 Posted September 20, 2018 (edited) I've read through about 10 years of Venture clutch chirp threads and I'm probably hoping beyond hope; however, have there been any new solutions for the 1st Gen clutch chirp (aka Jetson Syndrome)? I believe that the XVZ1300 right? I had a 91 and what I found to deal with any clutch slip (and the reason for the chirping) is this: 1st I’d recommend replacing the clutch plates & rings. Then when you go to put it back together you’ll notice the clutch spring is nothing more than a concave ring which sits in a retainer basket. I installed a SECOND clutch spring stacked on the first. The retainer basket is deep enough to still catch 75% of the depth of the ring to properly retain it. I had learned about this back in 1993 from a tech tip on what was the Venture Touring Society. Now mind you, you WILL feel MORE clutch lever pull but your clutch will NEVER slip again. Edited September 20, 2018 by ChiefGunner
uhfradarwill Posted September 20, 2018 #3 Posted September 20, 2018 Does anybody have any video or audio of the "chirp"? I'd love to hear it. Does it sound like the input wine of a jet engine??
Bob K. Posted September 20, 2018 Author #4 Posted September 20, 2018 (edited) Go to :40 in this video. It's the highest pitched RPM-dependent chirp you hear. On my bike, if I'm at speed and pull in the clutch, the chirp goes away. Similar to the chirping sound of the Jetson's flying cars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTq6Tofmo7E. Somewhere in the 750Hz to 870Hz range: http://www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/ Edited September 20, 2018 by Bob K.

I suspected that was it and now that I know, it does not bother me at all since mine is very low in db.
Bob K. Posted September 20, 2018 Author #6 Posted September 20, 2018 I installed a SECOND clutch spring stacked on the first. Now mind you, you WILL feel MORE clutch lever pull but your clutch will NEVER slip again. I installed the "Double-D Clutch Fix" on my '93 as well. I love it! However, it's unrelated to the chirp.

Bob K. Posted September 20, 2018 Author #8 Posted September 20, 2018 I had over 120k mikes in mine and never heard what you speak of. No kidding?? You never had that RPM-dependent chirp that you can hear at :40 in the @cowpuc video above? That's awesome. I thought it was a "standard feature" of 1st Gen bikes. I sure wish mine didn't do it. It's the loudest noise on the bike.

bongobobny Posted September 20, 2018 #10 Posted September 20, 2018 Two options... 1. Turn up the radio volume 2. Remove your muflers
BlueSky Posted September 21, 2018 #11 Posted September 21, 2018 Something to know is that in the video, Cowpuc is riding Tweeks that had over 200k miles on it. My 89 with 6k miles has very little clutch whine. The 2007 Gen 2 is another story though. It has a loud clutch basket whine that seems to be typical.
Bob K. Posted September 21, 2018 Author #12 Posted September 21, 2018 Something to know is that in the video, Cowpuc is riding Tweeks that had over 200k miles on it. Mine has only 40,000 miles on it and it's just as loud and just as prominent.
Sylvester Posted September 23, 2018 #13 Posted September 23, 2018 My 02 has never had the whine. I did install the PCM spring and inner full disc in the clutch ten + years back due to slippage, but never a whine or chirp.
93 venture Posted September 23, 2018 #14 Posted September 23, 2018 My 93 is the worst, i dont hear it in my 99 at all
