Vance Posted April 30, 2008 #1 Posted April 30, 2008 I notice my turn signals sometimes auto-cancel, and sometimes I have to turn them off. How do they work? Do they cancel after a time-out, after leaning into a turn, etc? My owners manual doesn't seem to mention it.
BuddyRich Posted April 30, 2008 #2 Posted April 30, 2008 I think it has to do with distance traveled.
Vance Posted April 30, 2008 Author #3 Posted April 30, 2008 I think it has to do with distance traveled. But sometimes they cancel while sitting at a stop light, or waiting at a stop sign.
BuddyRich Posted April 30, 2008 #4 Posted April 30, 2008 That should not happen unless you roll forward and its at the very end of the distance. Does the turnsignal feel like its still on? Next time it happens push in on the turnsignal and see if you feel that click like you were turning them off. If you do then I would say its the switch. Maybe a little contact cleaner may solve it.
Vance Posted April 30, 2008 Author #5 Posted April 30, 2008 Does the turnsignal feel like its still on? . Not sure what you mean, Buddy. I can tell when the signals cancel because of the indicator light on the panel. Have you tried yours to see if the turn signal will cancel with the bike sitting still? Could there be a time-out cancel as well as a distance distance? Or is mine just arbitrary?
Guest tx2sturgis Posted April 30, 2008 #6 Posted April 30, 2008 They should not cancel, if you are sitting at a light, waiting for it to change. They are self canceling only after a certain distance or time has elapsed, when you are moving. If they self cancel when you are sitting still, that may be something to have looked at by the dealer.
BOO Posted April 30, 2008 #7 Posted April 30, 2008 The signals do cancel on time, not sure how long it takes but they do cancel on time or distance. Mine cancels every once in a while while sitting at a long light. Jerry
Guest tx2sturgis Posted April 30, 2008 #8 Posted April 30, 2008 Hmmm....well, I will try to pay more attention to mine...if I look down and they arent blinking when I want them to, I hit the button again...I'm used to that from the Harleys I have ridden.
SaltyDawg Posted April 30, 2008 #9 Posted April 30, 2008 They cancel at 1000 ft as far as distance not sure how long you have to sit before they cancel but they do cancel. I know mine have stopped while at traffic lights just sitting still.
V7Goose Posted April 30, 2008 #10 Posted April 30, 2008 If your signals canx while you are sitting still (and have been still for more than about 5 seconds), you DO have a malfunction and should have it looked at if it concerns you (with one exception, noted below). The system is specifically designed to NOT canx while sitting still. This is a cut/paste from the user's manual - note the words "both" and "and" that I have highlighted: Since this model is equipped with a self-canceling system, the turn signal lights will self-cancel after the vehicle has traveled both about 150 m (490 ft) and for approximately 15 seconds. However, the turn signal lights can also be canceled manually by pushing the switch in after it has returned to the center position. The only time that I have found my signal cancel while sitting still is when I have already had the signal on while approaching a light or stop sign - if the required distance has ALREADY BEEN COVERED before stopping, then the signal can self canx after you stop when the 15 seconds has elapsed. Guest tx2sturgis Posted April 30, 2008 #11 Posted April 30, 2008 I love it when I'm right...which is just about everytime. Thanks Goose...you know, thinking about this, I have a habit of holding the signal button until I am stopped at the intersection. This is a habit I developed years ago riding Harleys that self cancel. I dont ALWAYS do it, but most of the time I do. This method, at least on a Harley, ( and apprently on the Venture) will keep the signal flashing during the stop, then start the distance timing at the beginning of movement of the bike. This way, it never cancels during early or mid turn. Maybe this is why I never notice it cancelling during a stop. I had to think how I do this simple task, its so automatic now. Anyway, thanks again Goose.
Vance Posted April 30, 2008 Author #12 Posted April 30, 2008 Thanks, Goose. That clears up that mystery. Now I understand why they sometimes cancel at a stop sign or light. My owners manual makes no mention of this auto-cancel feature, and it seemed intermittent to me. It's a combination of 490' and 15 seconds.

I bet your manual does mention it - look on page 3-7: Even though the Note in the manual specifically says the self cancel function does not work when stopped, it seems to take a few seconds to switch into that mode, which is why they may cancel very shortly after stopping. BOO Posted April 30, 2008 #14 Posted April 30, 2008 Goose, They must have changed the manual sometime during the production, my manual (2001) makes no reference to how the turn signals automatically turn off. The only mention is actually on page 3-8 in my manual. Strange they make no changes to the bike in 9 production years but they change the manual.... go figure.... Jerry
Vance Posted April 30, 2008 Author #15 Posted April 30, 2008 Goose, my manual does not have that information in it. It must read like Boo's. Thanks much for your help clearing that up for me (and perhaps many others).
V7Goose Posted May 1, 2008 #16 Posted May 1, 2008 You are absolutely correct - I pulled up the 04 owners manual, and it is very different. I guess I'll have to quit assuming all RSVs are the same. If the manual is different, maybe the bikes are too? I am sorry. Goose
