If I'm on a level road in 5th gear and doing less than 3,000RPM the motor runs good, no misfire, but she is lugging.

My 1989 likes 3,000 and up to be smooth and have smooth acceleration.

Is this the case across the board?

Thanks

65mph and above is where she is happy they love to be above 3500rpm

:sign yeah that:

3800rpm on up, she's smiling in any gear!

Thanks people for the info. I figured it was normal but my only other bike ever was a 1985 Honda VT1100C Shadow and I remember it being geared much lower.

I'll just start riding one gear lower!

yup my 89 likes best above 3500, though since I rebuilt the carbs she don't mind cruising along at 2000 rpm at all and will speed up without stuttering from there unless I want to just up and take off :bikersmilie: then I got to drop a gear or two.

The Beast is happiest around 4k but will cruise at 2k and accelerate smoothly if not rapidly to 3k or so and then she screams. I found that cruising at 5k is not a problem and acceleration from there is instantaneous.

One of these days I'm going to pick up a V Max and see what this power plant is truly capable of.

ETA:

BTW, my fuel economy does not seem to vary much with different riding styles. Loaded and two up makes a drastic difference.

My biggest threat to MPG's is the wrist twisting grin that happens ever time I want to enjoy the rush of speed!

Darn it...:biker:

Putting around on a 1st gen? That's a new thought to me, I save that for the 2nd gen. The 1st just wants to run.
My 83 does not enjoy 25-35 mph in any gear! Runs fine just rides awkwardly.

Cruising along on the slab at 80 mph she'll sit all day around 4.2 in 5th

I rode my usual 110 mi round trip today and purposely selected a gear that kept me at least at 3K RPM. You guys are correct, she does like 3 or even 3.5 then she is off.

If I am doing 2.5K she will still accelerate without stumble, she is just lazy till you get her up to over 3K.

I was in 2nd gear today on a straight doing 4.5K RPM and completely opened the throttle. Wow this heavy, beautiful 1st gen will get up and scoot!!

Yeh, a number of years ago I contacted Yamaha about that to see if there was a fix for that. Apparently they tried but failed so they simply discontinued the production of the 1st Gen. They finally found a solution to this problem when they came out with the 2nd GEN. :whistling:
