I picked the bike up at an auction and am now going thru it. Main fuse was blown and me, being impatient, changed the setup and it is now a 40 amp maxi fuse. So with a new battery and main fuse I am getting power to where it is needed. Turn key to run and run switch to on, I hear the fuel pump start. I push the start button and hear the solenoid clicking but nothing from the starter. Jumped the solenoid and still nothing from the starter. I pulled the starter and discovered the starter is junk. SM-229C is the numbers on the starter. What would be a compatible replacement?

Alot of the lop eared varmints around here opt for the post 86 4 brush as replacement for the earlier 2 brush models as they say the 4 brush performs better.. Personally, I have found that by keeping a good battery in my scoots and also pulling maintenance on the starter (splitting it open and cleaning the carbon dust out of them) the original starters work fine for many thousands of miles..

Might not be a bad idea to bench test your starter, even open it up and see whats going on internally if it fails bench testing, to double check your findings.. There are other mechanical issues, IMHO, that could be causing similar symptoms and it would be a shame to toss money at it for parts that it may not need..

As Puc mentioned, switch to a 4 brush starter. Search eBay for a good used starter from a 2nd Generation Royal Star Venture which will be a 4 brush one and it should run you in the neighborhood of $60 to $75. They are plug and play. The advantage of the 4 brush is when the bike is hot it starts a whole lot better than the 2 brush.

Your starter solenoid is pretty much the same one found in early 60's Fords...

EDIT: Just so you know, the fuel pump circuit is designed to only run for 5 seconds or less and then turn off until the bike actually starts! It's actually a safety feature...
