mike042 Posted June 12, 2018 #1 Posted June 12, 2018 what would cause small backfires when decelerating ? this is a new to me 2011 rsv and im wondering if its normal, its' not lound or bad flame shooting back fires but it never happened on my 83 rsv.
XV1100SE Posted June 12, 2018 #2 Posted June 12, 2018 I would start with a carb sync. Syncing my carbs helped with this. Do the sync and run some Seafoam thru the gas as well.
MikeWa Posted June 13, 2018 #3 Posted June 13, 2018 Make sure the vacuum hoses are connected to the AIS valves. Years ago in automotive we used to call these "anti backfire valves" and for good reason. Mike
bongobobny Posted June 13, 2018 #4 Posted June 13, 2018 Yup. carb sync is the number 1 cause of popping on decel, and an issue with the Air Injection System is #2 !
Freebird Posted June 13, 2018 #5 Posted June 13, 2018 I agree that carb sync is the first thing to do. There were also some issues with some of these bikes where there was a bad weld on the exhaust. Most were on the left side right where the two pipes merge. Pinhole leak that allowed them to suck in air and cause them to do that. With it idling, you can usually feel if there is a leak there. If so a simple solution is to clean that area with a wire brush and put a little JB Weld on it. It's on the back side so doesn't show.
cecdoo Posted June 13, 2018 #6 Posted June 13, 2018 Does your bike have aftermarket pipes? Mine would do it with Sampson Fishtails, put RK pipes on and no more backfire. Craig

I noticed a leak right in that same area on mine. I actually replaced the gaskets on both sides thinking that was it but it is still leaking on the left side. I'm going to have to check that out.
