Rear tires for 2018, time to spoon on #2, gonna try a Dual Compound Dunny..

The rear Shink I spooned on Tweeksis a few weeks ago is all but history and it is definitely time for her 2nd new tire for the year. Having heard/read all the great reports about dual compounds I thought I would check prices before reordering another 77 dollar shink and found this:

Hi cow Puc! The Dunlop is a good choice. I ran the Touring Elite II on my 91 Royale and consistently got 18k+ miles out of them! The dual compound is the way to go for sure.

Puc I have never tried the Shinko tires but have had several Dunny 404. I had to change them about every 7,000 miles. Now I am on the E3 and get close to if not more than 20,000 out of a set. From What I have heard they discontinued the E3 and went the E4 so that will be my next set.

Hey cowpuc If you remember in Grimsby my tire side wall weren"t to good so I spooned on a new set of Dunlop E4's and (yes they now make a front tire for 1st Gen's). Anyway so far I am loving them. So quiet and smooth and laying the bike over in the corner's is sweet. front was 120/90-18 65H @ $179.89 and the rear 140/90B16 77H rear @ $190.39 (Canadian $) As I said so far I super love the ride and handling. I have not had them at highway speeds yet or on wet roads, but on my way home from work after midnight i did use the dotted lines on the road like slalom course and weave back and forth through the spaces at 65 mph /100 kph and I found the handling superb.

I went through 2 sets of E3's and I got the same millage out of them. I actually did not wear them out the 1st set I changed because after 25,000 the rubber got too hard and would no longer hold the corners and the second set at 20,000 started to develop some heavy weathering on the side walls (in fairness to the tires, the bike is almost never covered except in winter and sits outside all year round). As noted earlier I now have a set of E4's on the bike and time will tell bt so far I really like them Edited June 8, 2018 by saddlebum

Personally,, I will be happier than a bug in a rug if this new thang just gets us there and back again without having to do the normal tire swap, or 2, while out CTFW on the west coast,,,,,,, THAT would be an absolute 1st for us and a huge plus IMHO!!!

A big test for me will be to see just how well this new shoe handles that hot desert tarmac (you know the stuff,,, the kind that melts your tenner shoes when you step down on it and you go sliding across the tarmac and that likes to remove your rear tire and place it on the back of your saddlebags ) out west.

Was it a Shinko 777 series? If so what miles did you get out of it? If not, will you be trying out a Shinko 777 after your next tire change?

I've got 10k on my Elite 3 which is a dual compound tire and I'm probably good for another 3000. I'm running an Elite 4 on the front now and I'm hoping to squeeze 20k out of it

Since the rear tire essentially wears flat across the tread, a dual compound tire should be excellent for the rear. On the front, cornering wears out the soft compound on the edges and it ends up with this narrow strip of harder rubber in the middle. When I bought a 2004 Kawasaki Concours back in 2011, it had a worn dual compound tire on the front that had a 1" rib of hard rubber in the center with the edges worn out and that tire made the bike more difficult to ride a low speed by increasing the tippiness and the old style Concours is a really top heavy bike. New tires made a major improvement in the low speed handling.
