Dropped the bike today

So today I was in the process of putting the bike up on the lift table, to pull the wheels so I could replace the tires, and just to be safe had a friend stand by to help. Well he thought the front wheel clamp would hold the bike up and so let go of the bike to grab a safety strap. What a sickening sight to see my bike topple over and go crashing to the floor from the elevated table. Surprisingly not much seems to have got damaged, I guess landing on plastic blue recycling boxes was somewhat of a good fortune. So far the major damage is (1) my brand new clearview windshield I just bought 2 years ago which between cost, exchange, duty and shipping ran me $450.00. (2) the radio controller on the handle bars,(3) the back rest and (4) some scratches in the paint. To think if I had just done it from the garage floor like I have always done in the past It would not have happened. Goes to show how the best of intentions sometimes just bites you in the butt.

 

On another note looks like my fork seals are leaking pretty bad so while the wheels are off I guess they will be added to my to do list.

OUCH!! That REALLY stinks! I can’t imagine the sickening feeling watching her go over., (sounds of screaming NOOO!!!).

Do mind if I ask an honest question. I see a LOT of riders here on the older 1st Gen Ventures, and I had a 91 VR myself. I loved it! My question is after watching all the forums: At what point do you get tired of always having to fix or jury rig stuff to work do you get tired of it and just get a NEW bike that you don’t have to do anything but RIDE??

Everybody spends all this time wrenching on stuff or searching for parts to keep a 30yr old bike going instead of spending the time enjoying the road.

Isnt there something such as “diminishing returns”?

I have no idea, I think it boils down to the individual and how you feel about the bike. It certainly is not an investment issue. I for one love the 1st gen bike with regards to its handling, ride comfort (specially on long trips) and performance. It can be a challenge at times and yet when its in top form its a hard bike to beat IMHO.

Oh Ben, I am sorry to read this, but glad to hear that you didn't suffer more damage to the bike.

 

And especially glad that the bike didn't fall on you, for who knows what kind of injury that would have done to you.

Thanks Dave and on that note, even better yet that my friend did not get hurt since I asked him to give me hand. Funny how there is often still a bright side to bad situations.

well I could if you happen to be available cause I noticed while pulling the wheels my fork seals are leaking worse than I initially thought. Your assistance might expedite things a bit since I have not done them before. I checked out Freebird's posting on the subject and it looks like a fair amount of work assuming I can get the seals on time.

I will look into it tomorrow, as well the wheels are off so I will get new hides put on tomorrow as well. Gotta phone around some and see who has stock, most likely Zedno's. I have used them twice in the past and there pricing with installation was as good as I could find and they stand behind their tires. and then scour there shed while I wait, for some parts to replace the damaged stuff or grab some lunch or both.

Geez Ben, that just sucks, as said by Dave there wasn't too much damage and no one got hurt. I know the feeling watching a bike start to come off a lift. I was lucky nothing broke when it happened with mine.

That's a crappy deal Ben, I am off from wed through the weekend if you need a hand later in the week. Let me know if you need any tools, I can bring them along. What' the radio controller look like that broke? I have one but it is just a up/down(scan?) Buttons and a mute button. I'm thinking yours is probably more advanced than mine being a mk2 but if it' what you need you can have it, I took all the radio stuff out of my bike over the winter

Hey Ben, I know as well as anyone how you feel about that bike which you had totally restored after it was written off and so, like others, I want you to know how sorry I am for you. So glad to hear that the damage was not extensive and even gladder to hear that neither you or your friend were hurt in the process. Good luck with your repair work. Carl has helped me change fork seals on both of my first gens which will take a good chunk out of a day overall. Keep us posted on your progress including whether you will be ready for the ride to Maintenance Day. Also, I would offer you the 86 for the weekend but I found out today that I need to replace the rear tire and likely won't be able to get that done before Friday.

Okay don't get me wrong when I say this because I love to ride and have been almost my entire life but..........I have to say that I also love to work on my bike. I've spent the last few months trying to get the mistreated 99 I bought back in service and I can't wait to get it back on the road. But that said spending an entire Saturday in the garage working on the bike is pretty awesome. Although my wife would probably not agree. Anyway I may be crazy.

Youre not “crazy”. For the most part I understand. I enjoy doing my own maintenance & keeper her in tip top shape or customizing her, but there’s a big difference in wanting to do it OR HAVING to do it IF you wanna ride IMHO.

Sooner or later they all get a "have to" fix, but there's such a sense of satisfaction in resurrecting an old one. Yes there may be a lot to getting one finished but if done right they are such a reliable machine you can go longer than the Energizer Bunny. To me it's like redoing a classic car but cheaper. There's nothing like running down the road knowing Yeah I did that. It's a sickness.
