Here's my bike on the Buena Vista ferry over the Willamette River. It's part of a great little ride near home I often enjoy.

There's a steep ramp where drivers wait for the boat. I usually shut off the bike, leave it in 1st with the kickstand down and chill.

But somehow waiting was more chill on my 89 Venture than it is on my 09 RSTD. Not sure why, but I felt that I could get off of the 89, but I'm relucant to even let go of the bars on the rstd.

To me, the difference is the kick stand. Maybe it is the angle maybe it is my imagination. Makes me nervous.

But the ride is worth it.

Something you might consider re: the RSTD kick stand...

(Bear with us; lately the 75 yr old memory is a fuzzwad on details.)

Cut down a piece of 2" aluminum strapping to about 5" or 6" length. Then drill 3/16" holes thru strap and kickstand, and rivets to hold the strap in place.

Makes a huge difference in your peace of mind, isn't noticeable unless staring intently, and handles any situ short of loose sand. After prolonged usage, you might get a slight rattle, but a little caulk will quiet that down in a hurry.

(You could paint match the strap, but really...??)

I can understand the feeling, I am paranoid of parking anywhere that the front of the bike is pointed down hill. I carry a short tie-down strap in my tool kit that I use to strap the side or center stand to the front crash bar to be certain it can not fold up. The strap rolls up to not much more space than a golf ball would take.
