I knew is was in trouble when I went out this morning. I slid the front end of the 89 crossing the creek. Leaving the house going out is the easiest way because the bike is squared up going out. Crossing coming back is a slight down hill right turn then square up when your in the creek if your lucky. Last year I dropped the 89 with MamaMo on it coming back from Freebirds maint day event. This was the first ride of the year on the 89 so I chanced it. I had a nice ride but crossing back to the house I lost control of the front end before I could get the bike squared up. I had to put the feet down in the water to balance the bike and there I was. Stopped in the middle of the creek with water over both boots. The creek is so slick I'm sliding my feet on the glassy algie covered rock surface just setting still. Let the clutch out to ease across the creek dragging my feet and the scoot won't move. The rear tires is spinning just setting still. At a moment like this you ask your self what would a more experienced rider like Muffinman,Skid, or Yammer Dan do? Probably the same thing dad and my brother is doing (watching laughing there a## off).After about 5 minutes of inching the scoot forward trying to keep it balanced I made it out without dropping it. Tune in next week when Froggy's new camp gets a 60 inch wide side door. I'm tired of this #@*^.

Gerald it wasnt a creek it was mud in my case and here is what I did.

Gunned it and dug the tire in till the mufflers were sitting in the grass touching the ground.I left the bike in gear and running and went across the street to get my neighbor.After he stopped laughing he gave me a push and I covered him in mud spinning the rear wheel.

When all else fails give it the gas.

A bridge is not possible or financially feasible for me. There are no other residents on this side of the water but my family. All the other land owners are occasional campers. Three or Four times a year we get a heavy rain or flash flood. That puts 6 ft of swift muddy water going down the creek. About every 10 years I loose my foot bridge above the drive crossing. It's 8 ft above the water. With occasional log trucks crossing the creek cutting timber up the hollow a bridge would have to be high and a heavy load capacity. The hollow behind my house goes for 2 miles. The well tenders and timber people often bring heavy equipment across the creek so no bridge would hold that much weight. If it was a private drive I could put in a bridge for just the pickup crossing.

You stole my thought! I know how slippery the bottom of the creeks can be but the best way I found is to ride it like a dirt bike, stand on the pegs and go through as fast as you safely can. Not easy or fun on a #900 bike but do able. Rod

If it was a private drive I could put in a bridge for just the pickup crossing.

If its not a private drive then is it public land? just wondering is htis your only way out with car or bike? id think the town would have some resposibility how about a culvert?

It is a semi private drive called Horseshoe Falls Lane. My private driveway branches off of it after crossing the creek. There are about 4 or 5 other Landowners but no permanent residents. This is my only way out. Town? What town? The closest town is 12 miles away. Out here neighbors live 1/2 mile apart.No way to use foot bridge with scoot or bicycle for that matter. The exit path on the road side is a 30 degree hill for 20 ft and only 1 ft wide.:no-no-no:

I'd do it on my dirt bike, not sure about the Venture, though!

How about putting some chain link fencing or expanded metal in the creek bed for traction? Rod

How about pontoons? You could float it across. We could call it an Anphibi-venture.

 

It reminds me of trying to take my bike out of the driveway during the wintertime sometimes.

3 foot wide bridge made outta some cut down trees and rope. At least you could rebuild it now and then with nothing but a chainsaw and some rope. Or drill holes thru them and use some 3 foot pieces of all thread and bolt them together.

What you do is make yourself a swing bridge with ropes, just for you and the scoot. That way when the floods come it will just swing with the water and will still be there when the floods reside. The only difficulty would be, learning to ride a scoot on a swing bridge, but then that would be a reason for lots of practice to get it right, and of course on the way out you can't just turn around and try again, you'll need to clean off those tires so they won't slip and that can't be done in only 2 miles, that takes a 100 or so. Well looks like no riding bikes this coming weekend. Rained all night and on and off today with more rain in the forecast. Calling for rain tonight and tomorrow. Took my truck over to the other side about 1:30 just to make sure about getting to work.

I think you have a real problem and it's gonna take some real thinking to get a solution that works. Best get a think tank together and the best place would be on site, that way the issue can be viewed and discussed with out any delay. So you need to set up a date, probably this will be a 3 to 4 day affair, and invite the real thinkers or those who think they might be stinkers and get the job done el pronto. All meals will be provided of course and sleeping accomdations come as expected, along with an after lunch snoooze.
