cruiserlover Posted May 10, 2018 #1 Posted May 10, 2018 I dont know if i will ever take my 2 83s and combine them for one stripped bike or not.I was wondering if anyone knows-if the rear subframe, all the handles and plastics, huge old radio etc are removed how much weight is that? I know some have made a cruiser version out of theirs,I was wondering the stock weight is about 850 with oil and gas, the stripped version I am thinking might be 100 pounds less.
cowpuc Posted May 10, 2018 #2 Posted May 10, 2018 Drop the stock mufflers and bend up some of your own and my moneys on you would lose 100 pounds with all the other stuff gone..
CaseyJ955 Posted May 11, 2018 #3 Posted May 11, 2018 Ill 2nd that having had mine partially torn down. Radio, CB, CLASS air system, luggage and bracketry. Its got some heft to it. Are you thinking about bobbing it or just shedding weight while leaving the bodywork intact? A first gen vmax weighs about 630 wet wt. and are quite cheap in project form, depending on your end goals and budget. Im definitely a big fan of the V4 heart in any cool project. Im not really sure what a fully bobbed Venture will tip the scales at but a few guys here have them and can maybe weigh (lame, I know haha) in on that. I have one of each and love them for very different reasons. Even my Vmax weighs a bit more than a friends HD but the extra 5k rpm and snort more than makes up for it, believe me! On the Venture I have considered pulling radio, CB amd CLASS, but everything works and it has no lack of punch in spite of its significant girth and weight.

I stripped off everything, but I really don't know the total weight before and after. But it "feels" quite light, mostly because the remaining weight sits quite low. I even moved the battery from it's stock location (up high in the bike) to a spot below the transmission on a hinged frame (so it can be easily removed). Keeping the weight low is really the key thing. The engine is quite flat, the gas tank is under the seat, and whatever else you can do to help the situation just makes it better. My 83 totally hauls and is agile enough to run on gravel and off-road (a bit) with some of the dirt bike guys. I'd just strip it down and sell all of the unneeded bits on ebay. zag

I got the title in my name on one of them yesterday.I would trade it, the parts bike, and all the ugly plastics for another project bike,250 cc or bigger.I got my xj650 going yesterday. What a fantastic bike.Lighter is better,no doubt, for me. Yes, those mufflers are giant cannons.

This is my opinion, and probably not just my opinion. but the vmax is the coolest muscle bike ever made. A stripped down first gen is a close second to performance. The vmax has different intake cams and higher compression heads. The exhaust cams are the same. They both have that smallblock roar when the throttle is opened up.It would be smarter and cheaper to buy a used vmax.Only the problem is the vmax is good only in a straight line. The venture is made for comfort touring and handling. It has roughly 98 hp to 145 for the vmax. I wish I had some sort of scale to weigh all this stuff on.I bet 100 pounds removal would easily be achieved. I sure do have lots of 83 parts nobody seems to be interested in.

I 100% totally agree with ya Cruise,, when it comes to singing the muscle bike song, nothing on God's green earth carries the tune like the VMax (start at 2:20 to hear Crud doing his part).. While far from being part of his little brother Maggie's R1 litre bike world, those little 1200cc V-boosted V-4 Max's mopped the floor with everything the competition could toss at em (from Magna's to modern V-Rods) and are still Benchmark in both size 1st and 2nd Gen size brackets..

snyper316 Posted May 13, 2018 #10 Posted May 13, 2018 Wow she sounds great! A guy frequents the Save a Lot here has a VMAX and hearing her rumble made me want one even more. What a sweet rumble they have at idle and when opened up, WOW Why Puc got rid of his I will never know because sorry CRUD sounds Better then MAGGIE. Sorry she just sounds like Pissed off Hornets Nest.

snyper316 Posted May 13, 2018 #12 Posted May 13, 2018 Don't need a Vmax when ya got a Venny! I have Tinker as well, but wants some buffier pipes. She rumbles as it is now, I think the silencers are getting wore out thought about sticking a pole thru them, not sure what that will do but may be a hair louder, but first I got to find some rebar that should work nicely!!
snyper316 Posted May 13, 2018 #13 Posted May 13, 2018 Cruiser just out of curiousity what kind of parts you got for your ol gal?

I had straight through slip ons on my RSV. It sounds sweet at idle and when you're running her through the gears, but I couldn't help but think it sounded like a lawn mower going down the highway:bang head:
snyper316 Posted May 13, 2018 #15 Posted May 13, 2018 I'm thinking more and more on macs but I would love to here zyxzz bike in person or someone running them before I pull the trigger. Never ride faster then your angel can fly. I am as free as the wind on my face.
cruiserlover Posted May 13, 2018 Author #16 Posted May 13, 2018 (edited) Cruiser just out of curiousity what kind of parts you got for your ol gal? I have 2 complete 83s.well, one is outside,no carbs.but the other is complete.would probably start if I wanted to buy another tci.It turns over great like it wants to.I have all the plastics, guardrails, seats, all that stuff.Like I said one is complete, the other is minus the starter and tci, really a true parts bike. The plastics are removed from both bikes. Most of the plastic is useable, some has a chipped out piece here and there.the saddlebags, trunks, false tank covers are in good shape.one is gold and white, the partsier outside one is burgundy. If you need something ronbayless57@gmail.com Edited May 13, 2018 by cruiserlover

All good points and very true RE Vmax. One thing that is true of a Vmax is that they do handle poorly in stock form, there are a few basic things that can really help that. I stopped short of buying expensive rim conversions to get rid of the bias ply tires. It handles just fine and I live in the Black Hills, it's stock except for solid motor mounts and Progressive springs. It will never be a CBR but it carves canyons just fine with a few tweaks. Some guys go further and add frame bracing, better fork brace and as mentioned, radial tires (that last one is the not cheap one, there is no radial rear tire in stock Vmax size so a rim is needed $$$$$$). Owning both I do agree that the gen1 Venture is a better handling bike in spite of its massive weight. Vmax and Venture engines are cross compatible, with the differences above being the biggest. A perfect mill would be a 1300 Venture engine with the 1200 Vmax heads/cams/carbs/intakes. I also believe the Venture gearbox has a couple different ratios, but the Venture 5th gear would be a welcome thing on my Vmax, seriously it's pretty high strung on the highway as opposed to the more relaxed Venture ratios and final drive.
cruiserlover Posted May 20, 2018 Author #18 Posted May 20, 2018 For about 2 years on this forum we posted what the new venture should be.unanimously the second gen with a vmax motor.and no cassette player.yamahawent lightyears in the opposite direction.i hope the new versions sell.they have plenty of bells and whistles. To me the venture is a mix of roadstar mixed with goldwing and victory crosscountry.
