"""""Thanks for the Welcome !

Joined the site today after spending the last few days watching "Puc Puc's" ? YouTube videos - He sure promotes you all a lot :happy34:

(Him and his wife are Great (from what i see on video)

He has been a god send to me on my 1984 Yamaha XVZ1200

I bought it 2 years ago,the guy I bought it from said it needed fork seals, and a speed O cable and other than "weird breaks" was good to go.

I took it to a local bike shop here in Sparks NV. and had them put in the speed O cable, new fork seals, and asked for a general tune up and to look over the breaks.....

well they charged me $480.00 for it and said they attempted to bleed the breaks and the bike needed a "whole new break system replacement" and that it leaked oil but that's what a bike that year would do and to get used to it

The front breaks worked just fine and the rear worked, just were very light, and after the shop the rear were pretty much useless.

(be nice here...) I have been riding dirt bikes, since I could walk, and have ridden many street bikes throughout my life (47 now) and with the front breaks good, and the compression this Venture has, I was able to ride the bike no prob for 8000+ miles with hardly any rear brakes (that's the be nice part)

was still able to slow/stop no prob

But now I'm going through the bike ...tearing it apart to address a bunch of little stuff (it has an oil leak about a quarter to half dollar size spot on the ground a week - not bad - but want it gone, going to put on new tires (came with new ones when i bought it and there about gone now) change plugs, change brake pads, and am going to redo the fork seals myself - the bike shop ones started to leak again after the first year so I'm going to go through it myself now - probably should have myself in the first place but with work being so crazy then I didn't really have time. change fuel filter, clean air filter, maybe replace battery, Already flushed clutch and break lines with all new DOT 4 ...........

That's where Puc Puc comes in... the web has given me clues to my rear break trouble and Puc's Video showed me right where the darn "Diverting valve ??" was under the faring ...

Damn 8000+ miles without the rear breaks totally fixed in 5 minutes after watching his video on that little bugger bang%20head.gif

Well anyway I'll be paying my "due's" Friday for the site here. Please forgive me if I end up getting into trouble and asking for advice to much if so icon10.png

I'm not totally inept with a wrench but by no means a mechanic

Also at the end of the riding last year I noticed the dreaded 2nd gear "jump" starting - that may well be over my abilities (will I decide to tackle it ... we'll see, maybe next year - it's almost riding season here

Cowpuck - - - see I can learn (not just YouTube's "PucPuc" to me anymore )

Thank you for blessing me with your Venture (and happiness in general shown through the vid's) presence and Wisdom.

And thanks to everyone else here for your helpfulness to others that just love this bike, I have owned others (dirt bikes, Gold wings and various Enduro's, even a ninja in the mix) but there's something about this Venture that I just seem drawn to.

I will try not to be a bother to you all (I'm the type of guy that tends to get upset with himself if I cant figure something out on my own first) but will ultimately end up admitting I'm out of my league and being OK when needing to ask for help :sign02:

I'm probably going to post for advice on tires - Thinking about the Shinko 777's, and want to redo the whole front fork seal issue, not just the upper seal I see in line, and final drive oil along with other stuff this weekend.

Thanks in advance:beer:

You are more than welcome Sha - happy to be of assistance!!

You might want to start a new thread about tires and such but I will go ahead before the guru's take over and suggest you consider the Shinko Tour Master 230 line. I just ordered and received my beginning set for the season and I think I have $150 in the set (hold on, I will check) = my 120/90-18 Shinko Tour Master from Chaparrel was 66 dollars shipped and the 140/90-16 Shinko Tour Master from Chap was 78 bucks shipped.. I have worn off numerous tires thru the years and found these to be about the best bang (poor choice of words) for the buck.. GOOD in the twisties, rain and even decent wear in the high temps of the desert region and pretty dog gone good off road charachtoristics for a loaded up tour bike.. The guy that really turned me on to them - a lop eared club member varmint known as "VAz" ( videoarizona ) is now promoting the 777's I do believe = lets see if we can get his attention here and see if he could expound on the how's and why's).. By the way Sha,, around here in the club house - if you wanna gets someones attention you just put a "@" sign in front of their club name and,,, sort of like ringing the door bell on the Beverly Hillbillies = they magically appear - works great!!

Forks wise - these 1st gen Ventures came with what I call = Ink Pen Springs for fork springs from the factory.. 1st thing is get a set of Progressives ordered if yours are stock Ink Pen boingers.. If you do the forks, do the bushings along with the seals.. Ditch that nasty fish oil that Mom Yam (and all other metric dirt bikes and streets) used for fork oil,, clean that stinky stuff out of there,, use Bel Ray 12.5 wt,,,, use 1" preload bushings on the Progressive springs - make sure you have the progressively wound section of the springs at the bottom... Add NO air and WOWZY are you in for a treat = especially if you love attacking twisties and riding some off road = good set up!!

I do like Shinko tires. Put the 230 Tourmasters on my 89 and after 3 plus years they are still looking good. They stick. They are smooth riding too!

I then put the 777HD on the rear of the VStar 950 Tourer... And loved how well it handled over the stock Bridgestones.

I now have about 1200 miles on the 777HDs installed on the 05 RSV. They are superb. So smooth. Just finished another 150 Mike freeway run up to Phoenix on this very windy day.... And really am impressed with those tires. They also have the load rating to handle the heavier RSV. Only time will tell how well they wear, and how they will handle as they wear, but for now... I'm happy with them.

They are cheap enough to try without breaking the bank too.

I run them within 2lbs of max pressure, cold.

Thanks for the info videoarizona icon14.png

will probably be ordering 230's or 777's for sure. Bought the bike with new spitfire 11 F's on it and though after 8353 miles last year there not totally worn out I didn't really like the feel all that much, Also all my riding is with wife on the back and other than saddle bags stuffed no real pack down weight wise - we usually head out early Sat morning and end up at a motel somewhere at the end of the day, then head back home Sun morning. Never enough time for an extended trip needing to pack it up with a load, the new home construction around here is to crazy for more than my weekends off the last few years

I'm going to try to get a list of my wanted items to order for the bike sometime this weekend and post it on the site here for any feedback / advice from you all :sign67:

want to get everything ordered so I can get it ready by 1st weekend of next month :fingers crossed:

P.S. Thanks Bluesky, ya thinking the forks may need a total work-over, the left fork drained out completely I think, not sure if its the forks themselves or the jackass I paid to redo them but don't want to risk it either way

P.S.S. Thanks Cowpuck for the advice on Chaparral's they have good prices on tires, will be looking over their site on other stuff too
