I have a new to me 84Â’ venture and IÂ’m really liking the bike but the brakes are horrible. Well I just found a 91Â’ on Craigslist for $200. Does a 91Â’ have the 4 pistion calipers? Are there parts from a 91Â’ that wouldnÂ’t work on a 84Â’? Assuming the brakes are upgraded is there anything else I would want off it to upgrade my 84Â’? Four brush starter? My bike has 58,000 miles and IÂ’m worried about the weak second gear. Is the 1300 a direct bolt in?

I don't know about the rear brakes being compatible but the fronts are if you also change the forks, different bolt pattern. The 1300 Mk II engine will bolt in but you will also have to change the TCI and carbs. Not sure about the importance of the differences with the wiring harness. There are quite a few threads on here about doing this.

Same deal with the rear caliper, different bolt distance. You can swap out the caliper mounting bracket but then you either have to swap out the swingarm or design an adapter to mount the bracket to the '84 swingarm.

 

Yes, the MK1 brakes are anemic at best. There is a reason why they were improved with the MK2! Maybe the other half or the "improvement" was an engine that was a little slower so that the improved brakes had a better chance of stopping you...

Well that’s no good...I don’t want a slower motor. Any ways the guy isn’t responding to my emails and he doesn’t have a number listed so I don’t know.

Just to be clear, the motor isn't slower, it's the drive train that is slower. The 1300 has more torque and will get to the marginally slower speed faster.

Yah! What Camos said! They're still waaaaay faster than a 2nd Gen, the MK1 just gets up to speed faster and believe it or not, according to the factory spec, has slightly more horsepower than the bigger 1300!

What is the difference in the hp rating? 1 hp?

For the brakes, you just need to change the lower legs and rotors. I did such and installed R6 calipers because I was missing one of the later calipers. and I delinked a while ago. Also I think you want the later front master cylinder (14 or 15 mm vs you '84 12mm) and while you are at it you should delink the brakes
