Hbolt rider Posted January 26, 2018 Author #26 Posted January 26, 2018 Doing a little more digging, seems Cali started getting nasty in 84, maybe that's why my 83 has it and your 84 does not. Many Many people have same complaints. Most find going to a different DMV the solution, oh ya, be nice to the people, at least until you get your tags. Mine doesn’t have it because it came from Oregon. Be nice and if I see it going down hill maybe slip them a little something something. 😁
djh3 Posted January 27, 2018 #27 Posted January 27, 2018 Has anyone read the link I posted in this thread? What or how do you read it? I read it as not required for a motorcycle. I sure as heck would call and find out. I think your reading something into , or getting the run around. "Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older."

I did.. A smog check is not my problem. I know I donÂ’t need one. I was already in dmv but I didnÂ’t have the bike with me for them to inspect. The lady said they need to check 1. Vin # 2. Engine # 3. Federal safety standards sticker 4. California emissions sticker. The emissions sticker like the one spencer post is what need. Basically saying that when the bike was originally sold that it complied with California laws and was legal to sell in commiecali. [h=2]Check the Label[/h]To find out whether a car, truck, or motorcycle is California certified, check the emission label under the hood. For a motorcycle, check the frame or refer to your owner' s manual for the location. The label should read that the vehicle conforms to California regulations, or that it is legal for sale in California.

XV1100SE Posted January 29, 2018 #31 Posted January 29, 2018 What do they want you to do once you find the sticker? Bring the panel in with you or take the panel off in the parking lot to show them? Download the picture above to your phone and tell them this is on your bike. How will they know?
grubsie Posted January 29, 2018 #32 Posted January 29, 2018 If SpencerP could take a clean straight picture of his sticker and give you the dimensions of the sticker, you could copy it to a cd/dvd and bring it to custom lettering/sign shop and have them make the sticker for you. No big deal for them to change it from a 1983 to 1984. I have a shop that makes all kinds of stickers and decals for me that I put on older 1960's Honda's that I restore, that look as good as the originals. I would think that with the Vehicle ID number, Momma Yamaha must have some sort of records that this bike is California compliant.

They just want to see it on the bike so I would need to take the panel off in the parking lot.

I thought about taking a picture but I’m not good with photo editing software and I’m not sure how a local sticker shop would feel about doing that. The bike wasn’t originally sold in California so it’s not California compliant. I have a sticker but its only compliant with federal emissions laws. I found a cover on eBay with the sticker I need but there on the east coast and the guy wasn’t willing to work with me. If I don’t register my bike in the next couple of days I’ll be fined. So I think I’m going to just try it and hopefully my inspector isn’t a hard ass. It’s ridiculous that they want a sticker that says it was compliant with California laws 34 years ago.

Good luck, I definitely would try a different DMV branch. if you need better pics, I'll get my 35mm out and give you whatever you need. Wish it would come off, I have NO need for it here in Indiana.

Who knows I might be able to just print it out or maybe the local sticker company would be willing to reproduce it. Anyways its worth a shot. I really appreciate it. Thank you

djh3 Posted January 31, 2018 #38 Posted January 31, 2018 I read about 4 posts on different sites yesterday from folks out there that said they just played the "loto" system of trying different DMV to find one that just said OK. I have been looking on craigs list here to see if anyone has an old Venture for sale or parts to sale.

I have been looking on craigs list here to see if anyone has an old Venture for sale or parts to sale. The next closest office is a one man show and I hear it’s no different there. The next one is three hours away but I hear it’s the place to go but I found a guy that will make one so I’m going that route. Thanks for keeping a eye out for me.
Hbolt rider Posted February 2, 2018 Author #40 Posted February 2, 2018 Success... I registered my bike today the lady didn’t even look at my $50 emissions sticker. I had extras printed out if anyone in the future reads this and would like one. They turned out really good and look oem. Even though she didn’t ask to see it I’m glad I had it.
Hbolt rider Posted February 2, 2018 Author #42 Posted February 2, 2018 The funny thing is she was telling me about other people buying new bikes out of state that didn’t have that sticker. Saying they should know and the dealership should tell them. I just agreed with her and thought for sure she was gonna want to see mine. If I didn’t have the sticker she would of wanted to see it.

I knew that if you had a picture with measurements that a sign shop could/would print a sticker for you. Glad you got it registered. Now, ride the hell out of it. You earned it!
Kretz Posted February 2, 2018 #44 Posted February 2, 2018 Ha! Just goes to show how ridiculous the setup is! Just so much BS!
Hbolt rider Posted February 2, 2018 Author #45 Posted February 2, 2018 It is and I only see it getting worse in the future. But I must say today went pretty smooth I was in and out pretty quick. That maybe due to the fact that I got a survey to fill out afterwards. That was a first I had no reason not to give them 5 stars.
SpencerPJ Posted February 2, 2018 #46 Posted February 2, 2018 Success... I registered my bike today the lady didn’t even look at my $50 emissions sticker. Fantastic, and you are right, if you didn't have that stupid sticker, she would have asked for it.
mraf Posted February 4, 2018 #48 Posted February 4, 2018 Time to move out of Cali??? I've thought the same thing of our Empire state. {Think Star Wars}.
